| optomistic1's Full Review: Infinity Reference 605cs Car Component System |
Recently I picked up a set of these speakers and popped them into my '03 Elantra. They sound great. What attracted me to these speakers was their size, price, warranty and of course Infinity's excellent brand reputation.
Running these speakers is a Sony CDX-MP40 deck ($200 @ Best Buy) piped through a 1000w 4 channel mosfet amp. It did take some tweaking of the gain and eq settings to get the sound right but once that was done they sounded awesome.
Installation was a bit tricky as the mounting hardware for the speakers is different than the factory stuff. So you'll need a little creativity and time to get it just right. When putting it all back together watch the screws that hold the door panel on located under the arm rest. If you don't put the right screw back in there the electric window mechanism could bump the screw causing a weird popping noise. If you get in that problem, you can take that screw off and grind about 1/8" off the tip and put it back in. (problem solved)
The "crossover in-a-box" is great. No difficult wiring here. Just a couple of plugs and your done. The basket design on the woofer is interesting. The "cage" provides more protection from projectiles than other brands. I listened to the Rockford Fosgate component speakers at Best Buy before getting the Infinity set. For the difference in price and sound quality, Rockford doesn't hold a candle to the Infinity 605CS.
The "highs" are sharp and crisp without shattering your ear drums. (They are capable if that's what you like, just turn the treble up and the mid down.) The bass output is more than you'd expect from a small 6.5 woofer. I've found the best wattage for these speakers is somewhere around 75-125 watts. I have plenty of amp to run them at higher wattages but I'd rather not test out that warranty even though I know it's there.
Now some details about the set:
Plus One? (patent pending) Woofer Cones - Each speaker size uses a cone about 30% larger than competing models of the same size. This is accomplished using our new basket design and hi-roll surround. The benefits of Plus One? are greater bass output and a two-to-three dB increase in efficiency versus competing brands. That's right two to three dB!
Hi-Roll Rubber Surrounds - The motor structure in Reference is longer than competing models. This longer motor structure uses a taller surround. The result is longer X-max and more bass output.
Silk-Dome Tweeter - This is not a commonly used w-dome, but a true edge-driven dome like those found in high end home audio loudspeakers. Our silk dome material ensures smooth response, free from harshness and fatigue to 20kHz, even at high output levels.
I-Mount? (patent # 5,859,917) Tweeter Mounting System - This patented mounting system facilitates effortless flush, angled, or surface mounting of the component system
