Klaxon_Oil's Full Review: Tomb Raider 2 for Windows
This was back when the Tomb Raider franchise was a live and kicking. When know one had any doubts about where it would lead to. Nowadays people think of Tomb Raider as being a stumbling point. What used to be a strong Franchise has been reduced to the all mighty dollar. However, in the early days of the series back when the action was on Play station it was great to play. In this age and era were bullet time makes the game it's great to have an action game where what makes the game simply is it's story and control system. Miss. Croft makes a great return but a weak one with no dual shock support thus younger and older action adventure lovers might not favor this game.
Story 4/5
Pretty good if you consider this is an Indiana Jones rip off. Even so replace good old Indy with a female and you get something just as good. The story goes all over the world searching for an age old dagger from China. Which when plunged into the heart will allow the holder to wield control of an all powerful dragon. What I like about this story is that it's more fantasy then reality. And, with the traps and enemies around it deserves a second look if nobody has found the time to go into the Tomb's this time around.
Controls 3/5
A greatest hit game in my vision usually means it's been programmed in with the dual shock controls. But, no such luck is found here and that just about shoots itself in the foot. A great game with some classical jumping and shooting action. But, without dual shock it almost seems like a total waste of time. The controls however are not something which effect this game in any way shape or form.
Graphics 3.5/5
When put to the test the graphics are pretty good. The look and feel of the engine has been well put together. What I feel is that the engine was designed to stand the test and time however. Yet, it's almost like an aging star let it won't be long before people will be saying the graphics have not aged well. Or, that this game was one of the worst in the series because it couldn't hold it together well. But, the graphics follow the story rather well and for an Indy rip off it's well done.
Sounds 5/5
Better voice acting then half of the Play station two games I've got. Fearing that my Play station two can't compete sounds wise this is some what better then Just Bring It. Which only has a few repeating voices and some announcing from hell. The story is told sometimes in the voice, other times in music, and finally through action scenes. This is one of the greatest action sound tracks I've heard in a long time.
Over All
This game stands the test of time even though it's the second in a series. Age is not a factor in this game at all and it doesn't slow it down. What does effect is that with no dual shock you really don't feel like your part of the action. Even if the game in my view has aged well the lack of the dual shock makes it a total waste of time at points. But, besides that it delivers a well made game with tons of action, story, and depth. If your a fan of the series or just looking to take a quick peek into the series I'd suggest renting it. But, if your a fan of the series buying it would be a good move.
