| BeeCharmer's Full Review: Jane LipKick Liquid Lipstick |
On a whim one afternoon, I picked up a tube of Jane LipKick Energizing Liquid Lipstick. The rich burgundy color I chose was quite appealing in passing, and for the couple of bucks it cost, I figured Id go ahead and splurge on what may turn out to be only a mediocre gloss at the very least. Something I could live with, as I tend to like their MegaBites Glossy Gloss formula in lieu of its overall lack of longevity. In hindsight, however, I should have bought a latte. Id have been much happier with my purchase and subsequent euphoric caffeine buzz for my trouble.
Product Hype
"This liquid lipstick formula comes in rich, intensely pearlized colors. Keeps lips looking lush and feeling fresh."
Xtreme color
Super-charged flavor
Natural Ginseng and Ginkgo botanicals
The Reality Behind the Hype
Jane LipKick Energizing Liquid Lipstick is basically a thick gloss that's supposed to wear like a lipstick. It is not a light formula by any means, and it certainly cant be described as sheer. This gloss is more of shimmery and/or frosty, sticky goo that one must drag across their lips - a childs play makeup, but with more depth of pigment and bigger hype.
Furthermore, this product does not apply evenly, something that I found extremely aggravating when trying to maintain a definitive line with absolutely no smudges. Its heavy and its uncomfortably sticky, two additional traits I dislike in my facial products. Admittedly too, this product may have received an average rating on longevity had the consistency been more comfortable upon my lips. As it is, I spent way too much time rubbing my lips together to disperse the gooey product until it disgusted me to the point of removal.
Who wants to feel that their lips are stuck together constantly? I ended up wiping this stuff off within an hour of application and tried to reapply it several times thereafter during the following week with the same result. Also, as I mentioned prior, this gloss does have depth of pigment; it stains ones lips and upon removal with a tissue, its stain and an acute dryness lingered for another good hour or two. Blech.
The one thing Jane has going for it in respect to many of their inexpensive, mediocre products is the scent they bestow upon them. Regardless of how each product actually performs, one guarantee you usually can depend on is that it will probably be an aromatically pleasing scent-sory experience. That is, of course, what I believed up until I bought this stuff.
Ragin Raspberry, is the color I chose because of its muted shimmery tone rather than a frost. It looked to be a rich burgundy color within the tube; however, it applied with more of a magenta tone then the deeper red hue I had expected. As for the scent and flavor of this product, these aspects were neither pleasing nor recommendable either. The scent, while rather strong, was more of a flat, saccharine berry overtone than a lush experience of ripe raspberry goodness. The taste? Indiscernible and unpleasant.
Lastly, while Jane touts this product as energizing and full of moisture-enriching botanicals, I beg to differ on this as well. Nowhere in my personal experience did I see or feel the benefit of these energizing botanicals. Nor does the mere fact that they included caffeine in this particular formula make it more uplifting than any other lip product I have tried. In fact, caffeine itself is known to constrict skin and can be a cause of irritation for some consumers when applied to the skin. Better suited to the reduction of puffiness about the eyes, or say... ones derriere, me thinks. Heh.
In essence, it is no more than hype to get consumers to buy it youll have to keep getting that morning buzz from a cup of coffee for a little while longer folks. On the bright side though, itll cost you a lot less to brew up that caffeine fix than one would spend on this gooey mess.
Availability
This product is widely available for less than four dollars at local retailers such as Wal-Mart, Rite Aid, Bartell, Target, and K-Mart.
The color selection Jane offers is fairly limited, there are currently only five colors currently available. These include Sky Lift, Cranberry Kicker, Slammin' Strawberry, Perk-Me-Up, and Ragin' Raspberry. Along with your color choices, Jane has included a bit of scent and flavor to each of these so-called energizing lipsticks. The majority of which are of various berries and chocolate.
LipKick Packaging
Janes LipKick comes in an elongated, .4 ounce plastic tube equipped with black screw-top lid and a long, tapered sponge applicator. One needs to take care when opening their tube of LipKick due to the fact that the product label does second duty as its seal as well. If you are not careful to only remove the upper portion of the plastic, you will also loose all product detail and information. On the other hand, you could look at it from the prospective that the easily removed label is a blessing, tear it with enthusiasm, and hope that no one will be the wiser to your cheesy purchase.
Recommendation
I do not recommend LipKick Energizing Liquid Lipstick to anyone. It is much too thick and sticky a formula to be pleasing, and well
it smells funky and tastes even nastier to boot. Save your money and a bit of your sanity by passing this one up. There are a variety of reasonably priced and adequate lip products available at your local drugstore that would be a better choice than this dismal offering by Jane.
