Have had this stove somewhere between 1-2 yrs with no issues at all until recently. After a tea kettle boiled over and all knobs in off position was walking by and heard and saw sparks from underneath the control knobs, shut off power at breaker. Left it off for 2 days in hopes of some water somewhere being the issue to give it time to dry out. Before turning on at breaker box called Jenn-air to ask about this issue if they knew about it and had any advice or if more damage could be caused if turned back on. Nothing at all, except they gave me the numbers for service technicians.
We decided to turn breaker on and see what happens. Nothing happened, all seemed to work fine and oven heated up. Then tried turning on a burner.....sparks when the knob was barely turned, not even far enough for ignition to kick in. Sparks and smoke came out from under control knobs and could even see on the side of stove in narrow gap between right side of stove and the counter/cabinets.
Scheduled service call and then began searching a bit more when I found several other owners had this same spark/fire issue from under the control knobs. So I decided to call Jenn-air back and push a bit.
Well I called Jenn-air. Talk to first level customer service for a very long time describing the situation, expressing my fears with continuing to use the product. Not once did I mention I wanted them to pay repairs, focused on the fact I was afraid for my family and home burning down if it can spark and potentially catch fire even when all knobs in off position. Pointed out the numerous other consumers that have reported the same issue, some more than once after multiple repairs. Even when fixed if this is a design flaw what peace of mind do we have it won't happen again. Very calm and factual with them. Without me even asking she finally decided to fill out a report and forward me to their "safety department" (maybe their appeasement dept). This next lady gave me plenty of the 'we are very sorry stuff, glad nobody was injured....blah' and then said she was issuing a one time authorization to Best Service to pick up the cost of the repairs. So that is good news. the rest I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
After thinking more I do plan to contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
I'd be interested in knowing the final or latest results of any of the other posters with this issue and whether or not anyone contacted or submitted a safety concern to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. willing to talk about this dgeorge@hotmail.com
