| cmaw63's Full Review: Jiffy Clear Grow Dome |
After using several Jiffy Professional Greenhouse Kits, I have found the clear domes that come with them sometimes crack around the edges and don't hold in the moisture and humidity as they should. They didn't crack often and usually after many times of being put on and taken off the tray. I looked into buying the Jiffy Clear Grow Dome separately...
What I Found
Looking online and in stores I found that the domes could be bought for anywhere from $2 to $5. It's really isn't much money...but I didn't want to spend it on something that I could probably work out at home.
While the Jiffy Clear Grow Domes work well when completely in tact, it was unnecessary to buy more. I found that using the press and seal plastic wrap I had at home created the same effect. I put a straw in each corner of the tray and draped the wrap across the top and sealed it around the edge of the tray. It held moisture just as well as the dome did. I was proud of my creativity...
Until I realized what a pain it is to take the wrap off and put it back on. You, also, can't clearly see if you have a seedling sprouting. The Jiffy Clear Grow Dome is much easier to use and easier to see through. They do come in different sizes to fit each tray Jiffy makes. Mine were the 11"X22" trays.
So...
The plastic wrap method I came up with worked, but the domes are the better choice. I've used many of the kits, growing plants from seed and I probably take the domes off more than I should. I can't help myself though...I have to get down close to see if anything is even beginning to come up! Someone with more patience than I have probably wouldn't have the cracking problem.
The Jiffy Clear Grow Dome does a great job at holding the moisture/humidity in and rarely crack, so I'll give the dome 4 stars...they work and are much easier to see through than the plastic wrap. Next time I won't be so cheap and buy the dome.
