| Suzer's Full Review: Johnson & Johnson Stim-U-Dent Plaque Removers |
I wish there was a market for plaque. I seem to be a plague making machine, or at least my mouth is. Alas, no one has begged for my plaque. No matter how many times a year I go to the dentist, or how many times a year I get my teeth cleaned (usually every 3-4 months), my mouth is filled with plaque. My gums are very sensitive, and flossing and brushing just don't seem to be enough.
I've had difficulty finding the right dentist. They all seem quite competent, but one was absolutely obnoxious (although his staff was great); one was excellent, staff was fine, but he was doing some sneakified things to supplement his reimbursement from the insurance carriers.
Anyway, I finally found a wonderful dentist located between my office and my home (Dr. Eskandari). She is very conscientious, compassionate and an overall excellent dentist. As all of the dentists have told me, I have a lot of plaque buildup, and my gums bleed easily. I am heading toward periodontal disease. She gave me a couple of different products to try for my plaque problem, rather than just telling me to floss more carefully (I've tried it for years, and I'm just not that good at it). One of the products was the Johnson & Johnson Stim-U-Dent.
What it is:
They are a product created to remove plaque and simultaneously stimulate your gums. If used regularly and effectively, you can reduce/eliminate gingivitis
Packaging:
I received a small sample packet from my dentist, but they come in small packets of 100-either in plain or mint. The packet I received is mint, but the flavor is very subtle (I wouldn't recommend it in lieu of breath mints, or a candy).
Their claim:
They promise that these toothpick like plaque removers are clinically proven to fight gingivitis (beginnings of gum disease for anyone not familiar with the term), by removing plaque/calculus from between teeth.
Directions for use:
They suggest you use after each meal. I don't know how realistic that is, but try to use them at least twice daily, perhaps when you get up in the morning and before going to sleep. Simply wet under the spigot or you can moisten in your mouth so that the wood softens and you don't injure your perhaps sensitive gums. Place between your teeth with the narrower side that is flat next to your gums (my vision isn't great and I can't differentiate between the 2 sides). Use a gentle in and out motion to clean, but don't attempt if your teeth are very close together.
My experience:
I was a tad skeptical about how well these little thingies would work. Heck, I can't even coordinate floss to get through every tooth in my mouth. Although I am quite talkative, my mouth is actually very small, and I have a little carpal tunnel syndrome as well as a new diagnosis of De Quervain's tenosynovitis. In other words, my paws hurt. Anyway, I followed their instructions as best I could, but found I had difficulty getting at the back molars. I brought this up to my new dentist's office. They suggested when it comes to the back teeth, to break the toothpicky thingie in half, so I tried that and it seems to work pretty well. I do find that I have to use a few for each occurrence rather than simply using one, but they are very inexpensive, and other than my silly thoughts of wasting them, it works well. If you have ever priced the costs of seeing a periodontist and their procedures, these are quite cheap. Of course, some gum problems, problems with teeth, are genetic, but some aspects of dental care are within our control. I am giving this product 5 stars, and highly recommend it. Better to be proactive now, and save time and pain/trouble later on! You may be able to obtain samples from your dentist. You can also purchase at brick and mortar stores. Best prices (other than samples) are of course online!
