Giving a baby a bath is usually pretty easy as long as you don’t have a squirmy child. And there is no shortage of bath products to purchase for this task, with everything from ordinary baby soap to fancy, scented products that claim to do more than just clean. One product that I have sampled and like very much is Johnson & Johnson Bedtime Bath, a product that cleans and helps to calm babies down.
Basic Facts About This Product:
This bath soap is made for babies and is designed to have a calming effect, to better prepare them for a good night’s sleep. This product contains lavender and Chamomile- two ingredients that are known to have a calming effect on babies.
This product has plenty of fragrance, but a parent need not worry about its affect on the eyes and skin. It is formulated to be as gentle as baby shampoo, with no stinging effects on the eyes and no skin irritation. The liquid is thick and clear, making it similar to bubble bath in appearance and feel.
A few small capfuls added to your baby’s bathwater is all it takes. Johnson & Johnson recommends using this on babies that are at least three months of age. If you have an infant- size tub, one capful will do the trick. With larger tubs, up to three capfuls should be used. The product is sold in three sizes: 9 oz., 15 oz., and 28 oz.

Johnson & Johnson Bedtime Bath is an excellent product for babies and one of the few products that lives up to its lofty claims. This bath wash is made by one of the best known names when it comes to health, and the J&J label on most any product immediately puts my mind at ease.
But as much as I trust Johnson & Johnson, I admit that I was very skeptical when I read the claims made by the manufacturer. The company says that this product relaxes and calms babies, even helping to induce sleep in many instances. “Yeah, right!”, I thought to myself when I read this claim. “What a way to sell a product- make parents think it has magical qualities that will make your fussy baby drift off to dreamland…what some companies will do to sell a product!”.
So, I tried out this product and several things caught my attention right away. The thing that stands out more than anything is the scent….. Wow! It smells like a combination of an air freshener and a touch of citrus and it is heavenly. I wouldn’t be surprised if some adults out there experience this great scent and decide to add it to their own bath water. It really is that good!
Now for the important test: Would Johnson & Johnson Bedtime Bath really live up to its claim that it calms and soothes babies? Well, I used it for the first time and waited for the results and, much to my pleasant surprise, this cleanser really did calm my little girl down. There is something about the scent- the combination of lavender, chamomile, and citrus- that sends babies into another world. After taking my little one out of the bath and putting her into her pajamas, she was relaxed and fast asleep in less than fifteen minutes. Was this just a chance occurrence? Apparently not, because this has been the consistent result almost every time I have used this baby wash. It makes babies calm and relaxed to the point that they want to be left alone to fall asleep. Of course, it cannot be expected to calm down any baby at any time. If a baby is wide awake in the middle of the day then I doubt this product would make he/she become sleepy. When it works best is when a baby is already close to bedtime. It provides the added nudge of drowsiness to send babies and toddlers into their cribs in a short time.
As far as the cleanser itself, it is non- greasy, washes off cleanly and easily, and leaves behind the pleasant aroma of the liquid. A small amount goes a long way and it makes a small amount of bubbles when added to running water. The manufacturer recommends using anywhere from one capful to three capfuls depending on the amount of water present. The small cap holds probably about one- half ounce so even the smallest bottle is good for about eighteen baths. The cap also lifts open allowing the cleanser to be dispensed through the small opening in the top. This is how I use it now. I no longer bother measuring like I first did. A rough estimate seems just fine.
This cleanser is perfectly safe for most all babies. It is allergy and dermatology tested, so it has been proven safe for a baby’s skin and it won’t irritate the eyes. The only precaution the manufacturer advises is that children with asthma or children of parents with asthma consult a family doctor before using this product. The reason is that the aromatic qualities could cause breathing problems under these health conditions.
Overall, Johnson & Johnson Bedtime Bath is one of the best baby products I have tried thus far. It smells great and leaves babies feeling clean and refreshed. And most important of all, it really does live up to its claims; helping to relax babies and induce sleep thanks to the contributions from the lavender, chamomile, and citrus. It is a product I give my full recommendation.
