The Logitech Z-640 is made in mind for the person wanting to add 5 speakers and a subwoofer to their computer for a 5.1 playback from a DVD for less than $80. This is a nice add-on speaker system to replace the one that came with your computer to give you a decent sound whether you are playing games, music or watching a DVD movie.
The Z-640 consists of 5 satellite speakers with a subwoofer that produces a total of 51 watts RMS. System frequency response is 35Hz - 20kHz, signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 75 dB with input impedance greater than 5,000 ohms.
The Satellite Speakers
The five satellite speakers each produce 5.5 watts with a total of all five giving you 27.5 watts of RMS. The speakers are shielded for use around a video monitor with a blue light in the front of the center speaker showing you that it is on.
Four of the speakers look the same for placement of two in front of you for left and right placement and two behind you for left and right placement. Now you can place them anywhere you wish but what I mentioned is for watching a DVD movie from your computer to get the proper sound out.
Now the fifth speaker is a little wider than the other four plus it has controls on the front of it for On/Off, Volume, Fader, Center, Matrix and a 1/8-inch headphone jack. This speaker is generally placed between the front left and right speakers, a good place it on top of the monitor if you have the room.
The Subwoofer
The subwoofer is rather nice and is the power center for the Logitech Z-640 speaker system. The subwoofer puts out 23.5 watts of RMS power
The subwoofer plugs into and AC outlet and the five-satellite speakers plug into it. Four satellite speakers plug in with RCA jacks that are color coded for you and the center speaker plugs into a serial plug. There is a control for the subwoofer in the back.
The subwoofer can be placed anywhere but it is hand if you need to get to the back of it. I placed it under my desk close to my feet and it sounded pretty good.
My Tests
My first test was the DVD movies! Star Wars II was my first pick with the sounds of the aircrafts at the beginning racing over your head and the subwoofer producing a pretty nice low bass sound. The actions at the end when the battle is in place, hearing the laser sounds shooting through the air and the explosions rumbling from the subwoofer. Days of Thunder is very impressive with the cars sounding like they are running around your head.
CDs and MP3 files produced an excellent sound that was clear with a nice bass response. Disturbed - Down With The Sickness was breath taking with the bass sounds, Nickleback - Hero (Spiderman Soundtrack) comes in nice and quiet with the pounding of the drums in the background to the full explosion of the song that makes it come alive because of the subwoofer.
Games! Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds was like a new game with the five speakers and the subwoofer. Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun with the background music is sensational!
When playing audio and games the sounds are not 5.1 surround sound but in the Matrix sound it sounds pretty good!
Overall
This is an excellent speaker system if you want to hear the Dolby 5.1 sound while watching a DVD movie on your computer. To get a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound from your computer you need a sound card made for Dolby Digital decoding and a DVD player.
Now the total sound for the system is impressive considering it is less than an $80 speaker system. Now a $300 plus speaker system does sound better but do you want to spend that much? The subwoofer was what I was surprised at with plenty of low bass sound bring in the action of the movies, games and music.
For the price the Logitech Z-640 speaker system is hard to beat, I Highly recommend it!
