| ritag's Full Review: Kettler City Surfer |
My sister recently purchased the Kettler City Surfer for her 5 year old granddaughter. I was not thrilled to hear of this since I had recently been upset by my 11 year old daughter getting a scooter. I thought how could a five year old possibly be safe on a scooter. When I saw the scooter though I knew that this was no ordinary scooter.
Features of the Kettler City Surfer.
The Front Wheel. The front wheel of the Kettler City surfer is similar to a bicycle tire. The front wheel comes in two sizes. My sister's granddaughter has the 12 inch size and a 16 inch is also available. The wheel is spoked like a bicycle tire also. There is a steel fender over the top of the front wheel.
The Frame. The frame of the Kettler City Surfer is high carbon steel. This makes the scooter heavier than most of the other scooters on the market today. It also makes the scooter harder to "take along" than most other scooters.
The Handlebars. The handlebars are made of the same high quality carbon steel as the frame. The handlebars are adjustable. This makes it easy to set them to the right height for your little one. On the right side of the handlebars is a hand brake. On the left side is a bell. This has been a real "bonus" for my sister's granddaughter. She really gets a kick out of this bell. The handlebar grips fit on the handles well and are comfortable for the rider.
The Platform. This is the part of the scooter that makes it safer for little kids. The platform is made for room for both feet. The platform is made of a high quality plastic. There are two non-skid surfaces to stand on. After much use, these surfaces show little wear. At the back of the platform is a rear foot brake. My son tried this out and he says that the foot brake works as well as the one on his Razor. Beneath the rear of the platform, there are two roller blade type wheels. My sister reports that she has had on trouble with these wheels. These wheels can be replaced with roller blade wheels. There is also an order form in the scooter packaging to order new wheels.
Portable? The Kettler City Surfer does fold down for easy storage. The procedure is simple but since it is heavier it is not as easy to transport as the Razor or Zappy. Because of the wheel size and the platform size, it requires much more space than the others. It is not really easily lifted into and out of the baggage area of a car or truck.
My Recommendation. I have no problem recommending the Kettler City Surfer for children who are learning to ride a scooter. My sister's granddaughter is a young five and became very proficient at riding in a short time. I would recommend that when riding, the child wear a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads. While this scooter may be safer for younger children, parents should be cautious and use close supervision of the child riding this and all scooters.
The Kettler City Surfer is recommended for ages 4 and up, I strongly recommend pads, a helmet, and close supervision until the child becomes accustomed to it. This scooter would make a wonderful gift for a child who is interested in scooters but has not yet experienced them.
