| akuhn's Full Review: Linksys NAS200 (NAS200-AU) Network Storage Server |
Linksys typically makes good products. I've always recommended Linksys wireless routers to folks. So when I found a Linksys dual bay NAS Unit for $130 I was pretty happy.
That happiness was short lived.
First problems occured with the setup of the unit. I ran the Linksys setup app from the CD and it froze halfway through formatting the drives.
Then it wouldn't take my password the next time I ran setup. I exited the application, re-ran setup again and it worked.
But then.... I tried actually copying some files onto/off of this unit. Wow. Awful. Infact, Awful doesn't even begin to describe the performance of this unit. It's slow. Really slow. Like, I could burn the files to CD's or copy them to floppy disks, walk them to another computer, and I'd still probably beat the performance of this unit.
Some actual copy times so you don't think I'm exagerating:
350 Meg File - 34 minutes.
6.88 Gigs - 4 hours.
In short - don't buy this unit. Don't be tempted by the $130 pricetag. You will be buying a useless plastic box with a bunch of blinky lights on the front and end up horribly upset because it can't perform the simple task of giving reasonable network accessible storage.
