| toospoiled's Full Review: L'Oreal Studio Springing Curls |
Wow, after an extended hiatus, I'm finally back to writing some real reviews here! Thought I'd write one before I entered into some of the new and very interesting write-offs taking place on here right now!
L'Oreal Springing Curls is a hair mousse and it's one of my favorite hair styling products. Obviously, it's one of those products that gets me excited enough to write about because here I am, writing after several months. Also, since I am very picky about the beauty products I use, when I find something that works I love to share my find with everyone. Springing Curls is a unique beauty product because of it's versatility and also because actually does what it says and more. Not to mention it comes with a great price!
Few, I mean very few products meet my high standards when it comes to me and my hair. I am so picky, that I will pay whatever it takes to make my hair look good. Which is why I love this product, because I don't have to break the bank to buy it. And, since I use it almost everyday and it usually lasts me almost a month or more, it comes down to costing me maybe around 10 cents a day - pretty good!
L'Oreal Springing Curls Styling Mousse is a multi-purpose, highly versatile styling product wonder that does it all!
I've done a lot of research on this product, because it's
something that I use almost every day. And, because of health concerns and just generally pickiness, I like to thoroughly check out the products that I use on a regular basis. I have been using L'OREAL Springing Curls for about three years now, so I feel confident about its performance and quality.
So why do I love Springing Curls?
First, it bills itself as a styling mousse and it is, but you can do so much more with it. When one uses a mousse, they are usually trying to get some hold, maybe lift or volume out of it and this product does a great job at being a mousse... but like I said before, it can do so much more!
L'Oreal's Springing Curls is a multi-purpose styling product all in one that you could actually use in place of a lot of different products, thus eliminating the need for several styling aids. I use it as a curl enhancer, an anti-frizz agent, and a curl activator, just to name a few. And, since it can function so many different ways, using this product may benefit more than just you. Think about it... if you can use one product for many different uses, you will help keep the clutter on the bathroom sink down to a minimum - hey, I am trying to help you men get your fair share of the bathroom sink space back!
So, I will now elaborate on the many uses of this product:
Versatility...This product is so versatile - Have I said this enough already! It's so amazing that it excites me - Sorry!!! Sometimes just the littlest things amuse me!
I use it in place or so many different products that I used to use.
Here's examples of how I use L'Oreal Springing Curls:
1. As a mousse
2. A curl enhancer
3. To revive a hairstyle that has gone flat late in
the day
4. To Straighten
5. To kick the frizzes to the curb
6. To make wild bedroom hair that knocks his socks off
I'll explain how I do each one these styling techniques
with L'Oreal's Springing Curls. Just go to in the section below titled,"Ways I use L'Oreal's Springing Curls" to see how versatile this product is and learn some hairstyling tricks you can do with this product.
What L'Oreal says about it's Springing Curls:
On the can it states that it is for: Regular Hold For Natural Or Permed Curls
On the front of the can, it says that it does these things:
Curl Volumizing
Frizz Control
The amount of hold it claims to have:
Medium Hold - I can attest to that - I would say that it holds even better than a medium hold. Of course, the more you use, the firmer the hold. It can dry crunchy if you use too much, but I never find it to be tacky or sticky.
On the back of the can, it makes these claims about the product/styling benefits:
Volumizes and adds body to wavy and curly hair.
Reduces frizzies and flyaways.
L'Oreal also boasts that the technology of it's Springing Curls formula contains curl enhancing polymers with multi-vitamin ingredients to provide a long-lasting hold with added protection and shine.
I have read that the vitamins or multi-vitamins in this product are B3 (niacin) and B5 (Pantothenic acid). And, I concur on the added shine statement, as well as the long-lasting hold, since this product does add shine to your hair and it does enhance your curls and their staying power.
The Directions (taken directly from the can):
SHAKE WELL. Hold can upright and dispense 1-2 puffs into palm. Work through towel dried hair, adding additional product into root area. Dry and style. To achieve extreme volume, finger mousse through hair. Toss hair over and shake hair as you blow-dry with a diffuser.
OK, most of the time when you use a mousse, they tell you to use it on damp hair ONLY because they say that it may weigh hair down if you use it on dry hair. This product doesn't say to only use it on damp hair - well, it does advise to use on towel dried, hence DAMP. However, I find that I can use this product on damp, wet or even dry hair...it just depends on how I am styling my hair that day.
Springing curls does not seem to weigh your hair down if you use it on dry hair. If you do use it on wet hair, it seems to dry and feel a bit crispy , but once it totally dries, you can brush or comb through it relatively easily and you are left with bouncy, soft curls without the crispiness.
ABOUT ME AND MY THREE YEAR AFFAIR WITH L'OREAL'S
SPRINGING CURLS
I get many compliments on my hair and a lot of people ask me how I get my hair to do what it does... this product, L'Oreal Springing Curls, is part of my secret to getting my hair to do it's thing.
I will now share with you many different ways I use this versatile product.
Ways I use L'Oreal's Springing Curls:
(NOTE) My hair is naturally wavy and color treated, so
your results may be different than mine.
As a curl enhancer for spiral curls using a curling
iron:
OK, when I want those really cool spiral curls that you can make with a curling iron, I use this product on every strand of hair. I curl each strand one at a time. Yes, this takes a very long time, but it is well worth it. Once your hair is styled this way, the style lasts for several hours even through the windiest of days. And, as an added bonus, you will and I get many compliments on your hair and complete strangers will come up to you wanting to know how you achieved that effect.
Here's how you put the "spring" into your hair; step by step:
You simply take the section of hair that you wish to curl with the curling iron and then dab a little (the size of a dime) L'Oreal Springing Curls into your palm and put it on the entire length of the stand of hair - remember, not too much -- just enough to dampen the strand a bit. Then, roll your hair up with the curling iron in a spiral motion, so that the hair is spiraling around the curling iron barrel. Hold for around 10-15 seconds (depending on your curling iron and the temperature setting). Next, unwrap or untwist your hair, then continue to roll up another strand, until you've curled all of your hair this way, using a little mousse on every strand... this product will make the spiral curls very defined with great hold and no frizz. You can curl your bangs too, then pin them back with a barrette or something similar. You will see that by using this mousse sparingly over each strand, will allow you maximum curl staying power throughout the day. (that's how I did my hair in my profile picture)
TIPS: I usually use either a 1" to a 1 1/4" barrel curling iron on the highest temperature settings to achieve this look. You can go bigger or smaller on curling iron barrel sizes...it just depends on how tight you want your curls. Just remember the smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl. NOTE: you may need help with reaching the hair on the back of your head.
Here's a quicker variation of the spiral curls:
If you do not have time to put the mousse on each strand of hair, simply put a few dollops of the mousse (amount will depend on hair length) on all over your hair before you start curling. Starting with dry hair and then just enough to dampen your hair all over. While doing it this way won't work as well as going strand by strand, you will still see a big difference in the definition of the curls and how long they stay in.
Curl Optimizing With Hot Rollers
You can use hot rollers in the same way as a curling iron. Starting with dry hair, simply apply the mousse before you roll your hair up into the curlers and then brush through to spread product evenly over hair. Roll your hair up as you normally do and then let your hair set for the usual time. Once you take the curlers down, you will be amazed at how much more defined your curls will be. Then, style ad usual. This technique may even eliminate the need for hairspray!
For Tousled Bedroom Hair:
If you would like a softer more tousled look, you can achieve this after you've spiral curled hair as directed above or use the hot roller technique. A few hours after you've spiral curled your hair or later in the day when your spiral curls have been in for awhile, you can achieve a whole new look for nighttime. Simply put a dollop or two of the mousse in your hand and then lightly fluff it around your head. Let the mousse dry and then
flip your head upside down and brush from underneath. Then bring your head back up and you locks will be wild and full. Your hair will look like you are on the cover of Cosmo. If this is too wild for you, take a brush and tame those wild locks back down and Viola! you will have a wild mane of SEXY bedroom hair that your man will go crazy over.
(An example of my hair that way is on my profile page - it's the first pic as you scroll down)
Another Variation of the Sexy Temptress Hair
When I pull my hair up in bun, I put a little bit of L'Oreal Springing Curls on my hand and then finger curl my tendrils. I just take my hair and make tendrils by putting a very little bit the product on my finger and then I roll my hair around my finger. I hold that in place for a minute then unwrap. This makes sexy little tendrils that really hold curl. You can create as many little tendrils as you want all around your head. You can make them fall all down wherever you want them and they stay curly too, even through bedroom play! WINK, WINK!
For Straightening:
After blow drying hair to an almost dry state, I squeeze a couple of dollops of the mousse into my palms and then put it on my hair in a downwards motion, starting from the top and working my way to the bottom. it's best to use both hands to do this. Take both hands, one on the inside of you hair and one on the outside and then making sure that you have some product on both hands, start from the top and work you way down in a downward motion to make hair lie flat. When doing this, you should use enough mousse to cover your entire head of hair. Be careful to pay special attention to the ends and then use a straightening iron or whatever you use to straighten your hair.
Sometimes just the product itself will be enough to straighten your hair adequately.
Another thing you can try to straighten you hair, is to apply the mouse to damp hair then use a round brush on just the ends of your hair as you blowdry it. As the mousse is drying, put your hairdryer on the straightening or low setting while holding the brush and aiming the hairdryer directly on the part of the hair that you are brushing under. This action will help lock you hair into place and keep the frizzies at bay.
For Frizz Control
Similar to straightening above...just put on enough mousse to cover the frizzy area - you might want to cover your entire head and then slide your fingers down the length of you hair to straighten out the frizzies. Using a straightening comb or iron will help tame those frizzes even more. Now this product is not the best frizz tamer that I have used, but it is good.
For a quick refresh:
OK, if you have styled you hair earlier in the day and you have been through a blustery day, a romp in the bedroom, a jog, or whatever and your hair has gotten itself into a messy state and now you want to make it look presentable again...simply put on a few dollops of this product all over your hair and finger fluff it and your style will come back to life. You may need to fuss with it for a little bit, but it does help revive your style this way. To get even more volume, toss your head upside down and then toss it back upright and you curls will be magically refreshed and have tons of volume, so much so you may need to tame it down a bit.
For All Over Volume and Wave
I put a few dollops on after I towel dry my hair and then I blow dry while tossing my hair over and blow drying from underneath. Then, when my hair is almost dry, I flip it back upright and...wow, I've got mega volume!!!
You can also use a diffuser for even more volume. When you use a diffuser, the curls seem to staying place and look neater.
For root lift:
For lifting hair at the root, I usually put this mousse in when my hair is slightly damp, whether I am blow drying my hair or letting it dry naturally.
If I am blow drying it out, I put a dollop on my palm and then apply the mousse only to the roots at the top of my head. Then I blow dry my hair in an upwards motion and when my hair is dry, it lifts very nicely at the roots.
Now if I am letting my hair air-dry, I put a couple dollops into my palm again, but I will apply the Springing Curls to all of my hair, then apply it to the roots. After that, I start scrunching and finger fluffing my hair. Then, I leave my hair alone and let it air-dry. When it dries, I have lift at the roots and really cool waves down my back.
Springing Curls is best on what types of hair?
L'Oreal says that it is for regular hold for natural or permed curls
Ok, L"Oreal says that it's for natural or permed curls but I can see every type of hair can benefit from this product:
Straight hair -straight hair can be made even more straight with this product or it can add more volume to fine, limp straight hair. Springing Curls also helps straight hair become less frizzy or make stick straight hair curl and hold like never before.
Also if you have trouble curling you hair because it is so straight or if you actually have trouble keeping the curls to stay throughout the day, L'Oreal Springing Curls will help you achieve curls that you never thought possible. You will also be amazed about how long your curls will last, which is usually one of the biggest complaints from women with straight hair that their curl only last a few minutes. Well, this product with held lock in the curl on ever the straightest of hair.
Wavy and Curly Hair -Springing Curls makes your waves and curl more defined and also help keep down the frizzies that some curly and wavy haired beauties have trouble with.
Any Type Of Hair (especially thinning or fragile):
Springing curls seems to give so much volume that actually look like you have more hair than you really do, which is also
great for thinning and fragile hair.
Permed Hair : It actually says that it is for regular hold for natural or permed curls, so this product should be great for
helping curly headed beauties to keep their curl in check!
Color, Texture and Fragrance:
It is pure white is color and it's texture is light and fluffy. It comes out of the dispenser just like shaving cream or any other kind of mousse. There is a fragrance to it, but it is very a light, non-offensive perfume-y smell. While I have a lot of problems, aversions and allergies to several different scents, smells and fragrances, this product doesn't seem to bother me at all. However, just be forewarned that this does have a scent even thought it is a very light one.
The Hold
I would say that it is a medium hold and that's what it says it is on the can...It may be even a little more strong with the more you use. Their styling chart on the can goes from medium to strong to mega -- well, this is the only medium, but it is still a pretty strong hold!
It usually does not dry sticky or tacky. The hold it gives seems to be like what a medium hairspray would give. You can actually run your fingers through it...it is touchable - so if you plan on someone running their fingers through your hair, you should be safe. And men, you can use this product to get root lift or smooth out your frizzies.
Compared to hairsprays - of course you can't use it like a normal hairspray, although you can put it on before styling and this may eliminate the need for hairspray. If you use it this way, you should not find any residue left in you hair, like you do with some other mousses or hairsprays.
The PRICE:
The price is very reasonable for a styling product that can do so much. I find it for around $3.99 USD at most stores. You can find Springing Curls in places like drugstores and Wal-Mart type stores grouped right with all the other hairstyling products. It's usually with the rest of the L'Oreal studio line. Sometimes it is hard to find, especially online.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember to be careful and make sure that you look at the packaging and not confuse it with the Mega Mousse (like I explained earlier under: "Be Careful" above), unless that's what you want that product instead.
Buying it online:
NOTE: If you do buy it online in the States, they can only ship in to the 48 contiguous states since there are restrictions on products like this, just like with hairspray. Bummer!
Drugstore.com $3.99
Walgreen's: $3.99

Packaging
The Springing Mousse comes in a 6 oz/170g net weight size can which is the only size I have found. However, a few times they have sold it with an extra two ounces for a limited time - I stock up then!
L'Oreal's Springing Curls Styling Mousse is part of L'Oreal's Studio Line, which I am sure most of you have heard about or have seen in the stores. You can easily recognize this line of products by the stark white containers with yellow, red, and blue block designs on them.
It's container looks very similar to shaving cream. It will have a plastic cap that covers the dispenser to help keep the nozzle clear and the mousse from spilling out.
Tips from the "Duh Department" ... Yes, first and foremost, remember to always SHAKE the can WELL ! If you don't, the Springing Curls will come out all runny and not all fluffy and light like it's supposed to, then you'll just have a sticky mess on your hands and the product's quality will be lessened. It says hold the product upright, which I do most of the time, but when it gets down to almost empty, I seem to have to tilt the can sideways to get it out.
Another Note: When the product is getting low, it is hard to get every last drop and it will start coming out all runny - there is not a whole lot you can do at this point, except for buy another can. You can still use it like his, but is messy and doesn't work as well. Anyway, it does is to me every time I get down low in the can, so just a word of warning.
BE CAREFUL: You have to be careful because L'Oreal has a product called "Mega Mousse" that looks almost identical to their "Springing Curls" and you may pick that up by mistake - I mean, these two products look almost identical - the only difference of course is what's inside and I think the Mega Mousse is a little bigger, although it looks about the same size when it's sitting on the shelf accidentally picked up the Mega Mousse one time and I can tell you, it is nowhere near the same thing. I cannot vouch for it doing the same thing as the Springing Curls.

Good News; If You Are Concerned About Your Health and Animals
L'Oreal Paris Studio Line: Springing Curls Mousse is a Phthalate-free Product. I guess Phthalates have been shown to cause birth defects and damage to vital organs in laboratory animals, but this product does not contain them, so just another good thing about it!
Say BYE-BYE To Bad Hair Days
You will not see me out and about on a bad hair day! Well at least not without a hat or extensions, but I very rarely have bad hair days anymore thanks to this product.
Kudos to L'Oreal for making such a fine product that's affordable, too!
I wholeheartedly recommend L'Oreal Springing Curls product because it does so many things for such a reasonable price - I wouldn't trade it for more expensive product if you paid me, that's how good I think that this product is.
Thanks for reading and happy hairstyling!
