Want Italian Food? Lots of it? Cheap? La Famiglia is your place. On the fringes of the North End, La Famiglia is a casual feeding ground frequented by large groups of students, teams, or other parties who want faux-North End atmosphere without high prices or long waits.
--- Seating: lots of it (an issue in the North End) ---
La Famiglia is larger than other North End restaurants, with seating for large groups upstairs in a cafeteria-style setting. This is particularly important to consider if you're going out to dinner as a group of more than 6; unless you have prior reservations elsewhere, you probably won't get a table without waiting over an hour. At La Famiglia, you'll sit right away.
The downstairs is a more accurate recreation of La Famiglia's fancier neighbors with two- and four-person tables.
--- The Food: lots of it ---
La Famiglia is best known for its oversized portions. We're talking platters of pasta for every boy and girl in the house. The portion size becomes something of a spectacle as patrons ooh and aah at the waiters as they shuttle the food out of the kitchen.
And it tastes good too! You'll find the standard Americanized array of Italian foods. Nothing fancy, but it's far better than the Olive Garden. The menu also caters well to youger kids and picky palates, with a good selection of plain pastas and red sauces.
--- Don't bring a date ---
Though it's in the North End, La Famiglia is not a great date restaurant; if you're going to the North End, your significant other is going to be mighty disappointed when you waltz right past the romantic spots and bust into La Famiglia. Instead, go with a group of friends and have a time of it.
--- La Famiglia will end your evening ---
Remember that you are going to leave La Famiglia feeling ill. Don't get me wrong: the food is very good. But you'll be so full (even after eating only half of your meal) that you'll be in no mood to do anything after dinner. So plan to see a movie at best after dinner.
