I work in a six story concrete building with no air conditioning. Most of the year, this is not a problem. (We do have heat for those cold mornings.) The combination of the mild climate and concrete structure keeps the offices and building cool most of the time. There are a few weeks out of the year however during which we have our version of a heat wave.
Our boss decided we could all get fans last summer right before our heat wave hit. It was perfect timing. (Previously, I had a little tiny 'fan' that would barely cool off my feet, because it was so old, small and inefficient.) We chose the Lakewood R12/DSK Personal Desk Fan for the four of us. It was a great choice. Right now, in the winter, it's pretty hard to imagine those long, hot summer months, but you know they're coming! Each day when I rush into the office, usually late from staying up too late, first thing in the morning, I'm already warm. By flipping on this fan with the simple touch of a button, it begins immediately to cool me off. It continues to keep me cool and comfortable all day long.
The diameter of the fan and "cage" (or grille) itself is approximately 13 inches when all is said and done. I consider it a medium-sized fan. I use it either on the floor or if I'm really overheated, I place it on my desk. Usually though, placing it on the floor does the trick. Although this is called a desk fan, when I use it on the floor, I usually set it to 'oscillating' because it seems to cool off the entire room that way. There are three buttons to choose your level of coolness from: low, medium, and high. Usually the 'low' button setting is more than sufficient, since this is a powerful little fan. There is also an oscillating choice made by pulling up or pushing down on a button at the back of the fan. The height of the fan is approximately 21 inches high. To adjust vertical angle, tilt fan head up or down as desired. It is also a nice alternative to having the window open. Where I work, it can often get noisy outside with the window open. By turning on my Lakewood Desk Fan, I can still feel a nice breeze, but without the noise, as it is a very quiet machine.
This fan came unassembled, but even for someone like me who is mechanically-challenged, putting it together was actually pretty simple. The plastic nut and blade cap are attached to the motor shaft and motor housing must be disassembled before the fan can be assembled. The nut and screw comes in a small plastic bag taped to the body of the fan. By following the simple instructions, which are, of course, included and by looking at the pictures, you'll be able to figure it out too. If I could, you can too.
Cleaning the fan: It is recommended to clean the fan about once a year. WARNING: Unplug the Lakewood Oscillating Desk Fan before cleaning it (good thing I told you). You can easily remove the front 'grille' (the cage, which protects fingers from the fan blades) by removing the screw and bracket. This is a nice feature because all you then do is to just pull the cage tabs downs to and unsnap to release. Very convenient. (I have a fan at home that I have to take apart with tools if I try to clean it, which is a big pain.) Wash the cage and blades with warm water and a soft brush, if needed. Another common sense WARNING: Do not ever immerse the motor in water. Let the fan parts dry before putting it back together.
If dust accumulates on the fan or cage it can usually be easily vacuumed off with a brush attachment.
The fan motor is permanently lubricated and needs to additional oil.
This Lakewood Oscillating Desk Fan is intended only for indoor use, such as homes and offices. (It is not for industrial use.)
Precautions:
"Do not place the fan on an uneven surface that might cause it to tip over." If I have anything that sounds negative to say about this fan, it is that I seem to kick it over on a fairly regular basis. It is kept nearby my desk and somehow I tip it over with my big feet. Luckily, I haven't damaged it at all and it has proven to be quite durable.
Do not use in a window. (Pretty self-explanatory, especially up on the fifth floor.)
"Caution to be used when in the presence of children." (Watch out for those curious, little fingers poking through the fan blades.)
"Do not place objects on fan." (Again, a common sense rule.)
"Do not sit or stand on fan." (I have never tried to do this.)
"Do not use with fan guards removed."(No comment.)
