| samarayum's Full Review: Leap Frog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set |
I work with children two to three years with Autism. So its always a task for me to find reinforcing, yet fun educational toys to reward the children I work with. As it is most toys with the label educational are extremely expensive, especially the Leap Frog name which is synonymous with great educational childrens toys.
This toy has become incredibly crucial in working with children that are non-verbal. Teaching children that are silent and have an aversion to talking can be rather difficult, not anymore with this fun toy/learning device.
The set includes a base, 26 letters, and numbers one through ten are also available, all which are all magnetic and stick to metal surfaces. The letters are on a base and are raised so that children can easily grasp them. They come in fun colors and are easy for little hands to maneuver into the base.
The base itself has a cut out for each letter piece to fit in, there is also a volume switch high/low, and a music note when pressed sings the ABCs. It takes three triple A batteries and is about 4 inches wide. Being a plastic base and plastic letters and numbers it is very easy to clean with a damp rag. Make sure not to submerge the base.
I guess the simplest way to explain how the toy works is that each letter or number has a certain bump pattern on the back that when put into the base makes the sounds or letter names come out when pushed into the base.
Every time the letter is pushed in the unit will say, ___ says ____, every letter makes a sound, ____ says ____. In a sing songy sentence that will instantly get stuck in your head.
When a numbered piece is inserted it says, Count with me
then goes up to whatever letter you have inserted.
This toy definitely outdoes the magnetic letters of our past! Those flat plastic letters that werent any fun except spelling out things you shouldnt be on the fridge. Now letters are brought to life, and gasp educational!!! Working with children who have trouble articulating language and letter pronunciation is a struggle it is very reassuring to have such fun educational toys that make the process of learning language that much less stress full.
