Why I bought it: I found the Litter Maid Litter Box on sale for $99 and decided to go ahead and buy it (I had previously refused to pay $190 for it). I bought it mostly because of my love of gadgets and partially for the convenience it offered.
What it does: The Litter Maid litter box consists of a plastic rake that is activated by a motion sensor 5-10 minutes after a cat uses the box. The rake pushes the waste into a plastic receptacle at the end of the box.
Cleaning: With two cats, I need to empty the plastic waste receptacle weekly. This can be a bit messy - if you let the receptacle box slip, litter spills (I recommend putting an open trash bag under the receptacle before changing it). The receptacles can be either emptied and reused or replaced each time. Once every few weeks or so, I empty the entire litter box and clean it. Fill lines indicate when to add litter to the litter box.
Safety: The rake will stop and back up when it encounters significant resistance. While this means that occasional re-arranging of the litter or hand-scooping (to get rid of big, heavy clumps) is required, it also means that the Litter Maid won't "eat" your cat while she is using the box.
Problems: The litter box is fairly noisy and may scare skittish cats. It can also be disturbing to light sleepers when it activates at night. The Litter Maid also requires clumping litter (so urine form clumps which can be raked out). Cost might also be a factor in buying this litter box - not only does the Litter Maid cost up to $200, but clumping litter is generally more expensive than clay litter.
