jiastar's Full Review: Barbara M. Walker - The Little House Cookbook: Fro...
The "Little House" series is a group of books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder - they are a semi-fictionalized telling of her youth during the pioneering days of America. Mrs. Wilder was born in 1867 and in 1932 began writing what would become a series of 7 books (plus an additional title "Farmer Boy" which described her husbands youth - which contrasts nicely as his family was more "well-off" than her own). This series later became the basis for the Television series starring Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert.
Growing up with "Little House" is one of the fondest memories of my childhood. I watched the show religiously and had the book practically memorized. I received this book shortly after it came out in 1979 (when I was 10) and I was overjoyed as I flipped through the pages.
The concept behind this cookbook is to take food mentioned in the "little house" series and recreate them. Throughout the book are quotes and drawings form the original book series and as such it looks like a "kid's book". However, the foods however are not meant to be cooked by children. They will need help from a grown-up. But if you have a young fan of the series this book will make a nice gift.
One of the nice recipes to make with your children is butter using a canning jar. Be prepared to take turns shaking the jarred cream as it will take at least 30 minutes to have the cream start turning into butter.
Other nice recipes are : molasses on snow candy, lemonade (the BEST I have ever had), blueberry pudding, cornbread stuffing, and oyster soup.
The foods within the pages of this book are not just novelties - most are meant to be prepared and enjoyed.
This book has been on my shelf for years - is used fairly often, and I look forward to using it more as my daughter gets of an age to enjoy the wonderful series which inspired it.
