After using my beloved IBM Optical Navigator mouse for slightly over a year, the thing began going haywire, so I was in the market for a new mouse. As I was shopping for a new mouse, I noticed that the market has become infiltrated with cordless mice, a technological advance that I am unwilling to plunge into. The thought of charging, recharging and buying new batteries for a simple device like a mouse makes me cringe. However, the computer world seems to be heading in that direction, which unfortunately meant that my options were somewhat limited.
I traveled to many stores, tried dozens of mice, nearly settled on a few until one mouse caught my eye at the last moment. The design was appealing, yet the price tag was hefty. I put my right hand around it and suddenly knew that I just had to have this mouse, even if it would set me back $50. When I returned from the store, I opened the box and found the mouse, a USB to PS/2 adapter, a CD with some essential drivers and a small guide. The software was very easy to install.
The first thing that you notice when you lay your eyes upon this mouse is its intricate design. It is mainly black in color, which is good because white mouse tend to get dirty and you can notice it, while the middle has a large blue holographic finish to it. When you look into it there is some color depth and gives off an interesting effect. The entire mouse is made of plastic, yet the blue part feels a bit sturdier. The grooves on the left and right side are just perfect for me, although left-handed people should probably avoid this model. The only thing that feels weird is when my hand is a bit sweaty; my palm tends to slide a bit due to the surface material.
The Logitech MX510 is an optical mouse. The advantage of owning an optical mouse is that is you dont have to clean it, it is far more precise, and since there is a red laser on the bottom, which sends and receives signals, it looks extremely nice. Optical mice are far more advanced than typical mice with balls inside are. The Logitech MX510 actually runs off a new and more advanced engine than most typical optical mice. The box says that the engine has a revolutionary 800-dpi sensor that captures 5.8 megapixels every second. It also tracks up to 15 G's of acceleration. Now Im not an expert on mice, so all I can say is that means the mouse is very sensitive and responsive, which is just what you need.
The Logitech MX510 has a built-in scroll wheel, which allows users to scroll through documents and web pages vertically fairly quickly, without using scroll bars. This wheel is clickable, and if you click it, you will scroll down, left, up or right if you move your mouse in that direction. You can even fluctuate the speed of the scroll wheel via the software. You can also re-program the functions of the buttons found on this mouse. Speaking of buttons, the MX510 has plenty of them.
Above the groove for the thumb, there are two slender buttons. These are used to go Back/Forward whilst utilizing a web browser. There is also a very small black button above the scroll wheel and one below it. These are used to scroll without using the wheel. Finally, there is a button below the scroll down button. This button is also very small in size, and you use it to switch windows, thus you will not have to use Alt + Tab anymore. The button placement was well designed, as I have yet to accidentally click a button nor have I had trouble accessing any of them.
The Logitech MX510 is also an amazing mouse for PC gamers. With the included software, your mouse will be detected. This will allow you to use all of the buttons while playing PC games, which is very useful. Instead of using a lot of keys on the keyboard, you can now get even more out of your mouse. The mouse is very responsive while playing all kinds of games.
This mouse is compatible with all forms of Windows and Macintosh operating systems, even Windows 95. A USB port is not necessary, as you can plug it into the stand PS/2 slot if you wish. The mouse also comes with a 3-year warranty, which is a good lifespan for a mouse. This also means that I will not be hunting for another mouse in 13 months, as I know this will last me atleast 3 years.
Overall, the Logitech MX510 is a wonderful mouse. It is optical, extremely responsive, has a plethora of buttons with useful options, the design is amazing, it is the most comfortable mouse Ive ever used and comes with a 3-year warranty. Personally, there is nothing more that I could ask for. Sure, the price might scare some people away but atleast I know that the product that I now own is of the best quality.
