This is a review of LHR (Heathrow), one of London’s Airports.
Advantages: Connections are very good. If you are heading on to another destination, LHR is a good connection point. There are many connections to Europe, Middle east, India, Japan, US, Africa and more. Connections take time – see bellow. If you need to get to Gatwick or Stansted , use the bus. It is as fast as you can get for the price.
If you are heading to London, the Heathrow Express is a very good option. If you plan to stay a few days, buy a pass for the outer zone, and you are on your way. At rush hour you will need to budget some more time if you are trying to get to LHR since some trains can be full. Driving out of LHR is a bit of a mess. Lots of people driving on the wrong side of the rode… But car rental is located at lower levels. Note that the rental return area (for Hertz for instance) is far and you should allow for additional 30 min when you return.
In LHR you have full range of services, very good shopping for last minute guilt ridden travelers, book stores, pubs, food. At Some of he airline clubs you will find a shower.
If you need a day room, there are several hotels at the airport at OK prices. Make reservations in advance if you can. Forte is OK, at low prices.
Disadvantages: The main problem with LHR is that connections that depart from different terminals require a long layover. It can take an hour or more to go from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 or 2. You have to get through the gates (long walk) to the bus (long wait) and up to the security check (very long wait) before you can make your way to your new gate in terminal 1 or 2. Half an hour is never enough, and some times 2 hours is just right.
Signs are not very useful and you should ask for help if you are not sure which terminal your flight is at.
