| chinafrog's Full Review: Luray Caverns |
In the summer of 2005, I just completed my summer research fellowship with the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore, MD. My family came to help me move back home but before we returned home we decided to go on a road trip to see the sites in and around Maryland and Virginia. On this trip, we went to Luray Caverns and Seneca Caverns. It was quite a memorable experience, more due to Luray than Seneca.
From Baltimore the drive took us about 4 to 5hrs with the traffic. It was overall a very nice drive. The entry fee was about $20, including the garden maze entry. All of the surroundings were quite immaculate and well maintained. Parking was easily found and there was plenty of it, sufficient for the hordes of people who come to visit this great attraction every year.
Anyway, there was about a 30 minute wait to get into the caverns as they had us in groups of 15 or so to have the guided tour. We had a great tour guide who was knowledgeable and funny. He had a wonderful demeanor. The caves themselves were truly amazing. I have been to Seneca and caverns in upstate in NY, but none of them are even close to this beautiful site.
The owners created lots of interesting things within the caverns. There was this great maze of tunnels that you could walk through in the caverns. There were pools that were so clear you could not tell if you were looking at a stalactite or the reflection of one. There was an organ set up in a cavern room that had perfect acoustics so that your could hear a single for about 40 seconds after it was played.
I think were down in the caverns for about an hour but I could have stayed down there even longer.
Then we went to the garden maze which was just next door. I thought that this would be something more appropriate for kids, but it wasn't.. People of all ages will enjoy it. What is it? Basically, it is a labyrinth made of giant walls of hedge and other plants. You get different clues as to how to get to the next level. It was very nicely maintained and very clean. There is a gift store at the finish line which is kind of expensive, as well as a concession stand.
Overall, Luray was a great experience and I will definitely recommend to anyone who wants to go.
