I was a tomboy growing up. My sister played with Barbies, and I played with Erector sets and Tonka trucks. I climbed trees and built things in the garage with my dad. Once in a while, I would deign to play dress up with other girls. When we did, we often wore perfumes designed for little girls. These perfumes smelled like lemons or some soft floral scent. Applied lightly, they faded in ten minutes. They always made me feel a little too lacy and girly.
When I was a Bat Mitzvah in the year ....well, lets just say some time ago....when I was a Bat Mitzvah, I received many gifts from people who loved me. Among these was a box of Maja soaps and a bottle of Maja perfume. I took the lid off the box of three elegantly wrapped soaps from Spain. What a revelation! This was no namby-pamby floral. This was no wearable Lemon-Pledge. This was a strong, vibrant, spicy and woodsy scent. It was exotic and feminine and not at all sissy. Thus began my addiction to perfumes and fancy soaps.
That first box of Maja soaps didn't last very long. I loved it and used it regularly. From that day to this, I always have Maja soaps and perfumes around. The Maja scent was launched by the design house of Myrurgia in 1921. Myrugia is a Spanish design house, and Maja smells of all the wonderful and exotic things one might associate with Spain. It includes citrus, lavendar, spices and woods. It has an oriental, spicy smell to it.
These soaps can be expensive, but they are worth it. They are quite densely milled and last a long time. Because the scent is heady, I recommend using it for evenings out. Maja soaps come in both rectangular and round bars. You can find them packaged individually or in sets. that have a number of configurations. Most commonly, I find a 3 pack of soaps that comes in a box with a clear plastic lid. It includes 2 round 5.2 ounce soaps and 1 3.5 ounce soaps. Plan on spending about $25 for that at regular price. You can find it for less on sale. Or I find another set with 3 5.2 ounce soaps for about $30. The 5 ounce shower gel runs about $25. This runs out very quickly, and I wouldn't really recommend it. If you just want to try it out these soaps, you can find occasionally half-ounce rectangular bars for about $2.50-$3. These are difficult to locate in stores, but should be available on line.
All the soaps come elegantly packaged in black and red paper with a flamenco dancer on the front. If you just want something beautiful to put out on the counter and add aroma to your room, this is a good choice.
Of course, the best deal is not the soaps. You can also get Maja perfumes. The half ounce eau de parfum spray costs about $16.
I love my Maja and find it lifts my spirits to wear it. I highly recommend the perfume. I love the soaps, too. If you want a scent that will transport your spirit to someplace exotic, give Maja a try.
