| Freak369's Full Review: MINNESOTA MINING AND MANU. Scotch Magic 810 Tape W... |
Scotch tape. Invisible tape. Magic tape. No matter what you call it, you cant have a functioning home office without it. There are more than a few brands to choose from and some of the prices might blow you away the store brand ones are often cheap and inferior, making you pick at the edges to get it started if it comes unhinged from the cutting rail usually resulting in a stream of four, seven and ten letter words
. well, at least thats the way it seems to go for me when I tried to save a few pennies. 3M, or Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, has become a front runner in the tape department with everything from personal sized dispensers to industrial rollers and sealers. Theyve almost conquered the market when it comes to scotch tape and the cornerstone of their arsenal is good old number 810, the standard sized 650 inch magic tape with clear plastic dispenser.
3M Scotch Magic Tape 3/4 x 650
Packaged in a clear, user-friendly dispenser case, 3M Scotch Magic Tape is a true office essential. The uses for this product are unlimited but here are just a few of my most common uses; sealing large envelopes, covering address labels, repaired ripped pages in notebooks, sticking up phone messages and of course comic relief - the pig nose [take tape, apply to bottom of nose, press tape to forehead, squeal]. The size makes it practical for most jobs but there are some cases when you will need something smaller or something larger. Either way, there is a size just right for you. The three quarter inch width gives you just enough space on the edges to properly place the tape without having to worry about it getting stuck to itself. When placed on most items it is invisible when pressed in to place however fingerprints are visible more so if your hands have a little dirt on them since the tape will pick it up and transfer it on to the item you are working with.
Efficient & Durable
This can be used on any type of paper or cardboard to fix rips, attach items or combine sections together. My sons use this for their models since it is completely invisible when it is pressed in place. Its strong enough to hold together the sections of the models but easy for them to use, rip off and work with. For me, this is something that I use all the time when sealing letters, manila envelopes and labels on small packages. One of the nicest things about this type of tape is that it rarely splits; this is something that is extremely frustrating when the tape slips back on to the roll and needs to be picked off to restart it or reattach it to the dispenser. The plastic cutter on the front of the dispenser allows you to cut off a piece with minimal effort and the small tab space is perfect for holding the tape in place until you need to use it.
Just like most other magic or scotch tapes, this one isnt removable so make sure that you have the positioning correct when you go to apply it. If you are working with art pieces or defining lines you may want to go with the removable magic tape version of this product. It sticks just as well but can be removed when you are done with it. This tape works on almost any type of surface but you will want to make sure that its free of any dirt, dust or grime if not youll end up with a bumpy surface and a potentially ruined project. I use this for pretty much everything around the house and have had nothing but good luck with it so far. The boys like the thin dispenser since its easier to work with than those that can be cracked open and refilled and they are a total asset when they are doing field trips, again, if they lose it, its no big deal.
Prices
If you are just picking up one dispenser you can expect to pay about $1.19 for these at most stores however office supply stores usually carry them for a little less. You can also pick up the bulk packs of six or twelve and save some extra cash doing so. For the price, this particular brand of tape is one of the best on the market for consumer needs but if you are looking for something industrial, youll need to look at other products in the 3M family. Since this is a disposable case you dont have to worry about it getting lost or damaged since it can easily be replaced.
The Bottom Line
If you are looking for a sturdy, strong sticking tape that can be used for a number of things around the house or in the office, 3M Scotch Magic Tape is the way to go. Its inexpensive, leaves almost no trace of it once its pressed into place and the disposable dispenser means you can lose it or break it without having to worry about forking out a lot to replace it. As I mentioned, this is great for kids to work with since the tape is strong but no so much so that it will hurt their skin if they get it stuck on themselves. Besides that, when doing the good old pig nose routine it really cleans out the pores on your nose and forehead.
