| MagickCat's Full Review: Mattel Masters of the Universe: Spin Blade Skeleto... |
Sucketor is the overload of variants, I mean overlord of evil, baby!
Figuring it all Out
Spin Blade Skeletor is, by my last count anyways, one of the roughly EIGHT different Skeletors produced by Mattel.
You can't tell me that isn't bordering on being ridiculously
redundant. As great as Skelly is no one needs that many Skeletors.
I never intended on picking up Spin Blade Skeletor but Zellers pulled a Bob Barker and the price was right. And I never intended on reviewing Spin Blade Skeletor until I found out what a piece of junk this toy is.
Same old Same old
Really Spin Blade Skeletor is just regular old 6" Skeletor with black and bronze armor instead of black and purple armor. As such Spin Blade Skeletor is well sculpted. He has the same great detailing like protruding veins, blue skin, fungal toe nails and man nipples.
Amour Armor
As I mentioned this toy comes sporting bronze armor made of soft flimsy plastic. Unfortunately, you can only take Spin Blade Skeletor's chest armor off, the rest of it is non-removable. And to save you the trouble of lifting up the tassels of Skelly's skirt... yes he is wearing panties...and they're black...
Oooh la la.
Skelly's chest armor is held in place with straps and small buckles, this looks like it could be a source of frustration for small kids. I know I find undoing the buckles a little frustrating and I don't have huge hands either.
The straps seem weak and I doubt it would take much force to snap them. I had toys as a kid with similar straps made out of much stronger plastics which I still ended up destroying. Taking the chest armor off regularly would probably result in breakage.
Skeletor without the Havoc Staff?
Spin Blade Skeletor's weapons are pretty lame. This figure comes with the spin blade and the usual double sword of suck! I hate Skeletor's sword. This accessory splits in half all the time, making it easy to loose one piece of the sword, and the sword does not fit well into his hand. I've also noticed the plastic blades of Skelly's double sword have a tendency to warp over time. At least they did with my Battle Sound Skeletor.
The spin blade looks more like a evil corsage that villains might give to each other on prom night than a weapon. Basically all the spin blade is, is just a large black bat horde wing shaped thingy that snaps onto Spin Blade Skeletor's wrist. Oh and you can twirl it around.
Big Whoop.
Oh and there is also some sort of chip implanted in Spin Blade Skeletor's foot. I'm not sure what it is for but I think it is supposed to work with Castle Greyskull or maybe send Skelly on a Bratz destroying rampage or something.
Hey its Mattel I wouldn't be all that surprised.
Art of Articulation
Everyone seems really into articulation these days, sometimes to the point of over kill. Spin Blade Skeletor strikes a nice balance I think. If you are expecting Marvel Legends type articulation you will be greatly disappointed.
Spin Blade Skeletor's head and wrists turn and his arms and legs move most every way with ease. There is also a button on Spin Blade Skeletor's back that swings his right hand up and down.
When you turn Spin Blade Skeletor's torso to the left or right the torso swings back to face forward when you let go. Or at least it did for 4 days and then the waist mechanism broke!
My figures are 95% for display on my desk and it isn't like I'm bashing the hell out of them. I twisted his waist maybe 10 times and my Skelly broke?
This is simply not acceptable.
AWESOME STICKER INCLUDED
In the glory days of He-man a mini comic was included with each toy. Today that comic is replaced by Mattel's AWESOME STICKER. For the longest time I thought I was getting jipped because I couldn't find the AWESOME STICKER included with my toy...it turns out the AWESOME STICKER is just the Masters of the Universe logo inserted inside the plastic packaging.
Isn't that AWESOME?
The birth of SUCKETOR
Had I paid more than 4.95 I would have felt utterly ripped off by a toy that breaks in less than a week. Somehow I still feel ripped off and a little annoyed with Mattel. Plus I have heard of other people having their new MoTU figures fall apart on them as well.
What is up with Mattel? First they go Henry Ford of MotU, ex. you can have any figure you want so long as it is He-man or Skeletor, and now they've broken up Barbie and Ken.
If this is the quality of their products I will be making an effort not to purchase products from Mattel in the future.
