Pros: Deep, rich color, great thickening, high drama, splashes off with water
Cons: The rose scent is a bit baffling, can be clumpy
The Bottom Line: This is great for evening use when you want a bit of added drama, but might be a bit much for every day use.

| Cutie_pi's Full Review: Maybelline The Colossal Volum' Express Mascara |
There are some cosmetics I won't skimp on - foundation, for instance... there are some mass market brands I use occasionally, but MAC is where my heart is. But when it comes to mascara, I'm cheap-cheap! I mean why blow big bucks on something that you're only supposed to keep around for 2-3 months before replacing, right? It's no wonder I've tried nearly every drugstore brand of mascara around!
Over the years, I've used Maybelline's Volum' Express, and Volum' Express Turbo Boost, and I've been pleased with both (especially the latter). They give noticeable thickening, deep, rich color, and they're very inexpensive. But then one day a different Volum' Express caught my eye - rather than the normal, subtle navy blue or black tube, this one screams for your attention in a vibrant yellow tube with purple lettering.
I glanced over the packaging, which claimed to give 9X the volume. NINE TIMES???? Volum' Express claims 3x; Volum' Express Turbo Boost claims 5x... so 9x???? WOW... this I've got to try!
The first morning I used it, I was in a hurry, so I barely gave a *swat, swat* to each lid before heading out the door (and I barely looked at the results). Throughout the day, however, I kept noticing a scent - similar to Rose Water & Glycerin (if you're not familiar with that scent, just picture a sweet, old grandmother -- chances are, that's the scent she's wearing!). The scent was faint, but completely baffling (as I've never worn anything rose scented in my life!).
The next morning, I wasn't running as late, so I took my time putting on my makeup. As I opened the tube of mascara, there it was again -- the rose scent. Huh? Seriously?? So I sniffed the wand. Whoah. Rose scented mascara. This is odd. *shrug*
(As a sidenote, I believe the rose scent has been added to mask an unpleasant scent, as once the tube has been used several times, the rose scent fades a bit, and a more chemical scent becomes evident).
Tthe mascara itself, the formula is very, very thick and velvety in texture. The wand is very, very densely packed with fairly short bristles. The thick formula clings to the bristles, and in fact, can come out in globs, so often times I have to scrape some off on the neck of the tube before applying.
Application is fairly smooth, with occasional globs. Again, since so much of the mascara clings to the brush, I have found that my lashes will clump together here and there if there's too much on the brush. But if I remove the excess, it goes on very nicely, achieving a very deep, rich black fringe around my eyes (the shade I use is "Glam Black").
While I don't know if it's truly "nine times" the volume, it is indeed a very dramatic, thickening mascara. One coat will suffice in most instances. For evening drama, two coats is downright spellbinding.
One of the best features of this mascara, however, is just how easily it washes off! In the shower or sink, a few splashes of water rinses most of it away; what's left comes away easily with facial cleanser. Very rarely have I had to use eye makeup remover when wearing this mascara (and we all know that the less pulling and tugging on our eyelids, the better!).
All in all, I'm very pleased with the Volum' Express Colassal mascara, especially for evening, when I like a bit of added drama. The thickness and intensity might be a bit much for some people for daytime, however.
It's not perfect, but for the price, it's well worth it in my opinion.
