| BOSSC351's Full Review: Maytag MDB8600AW Jetclean II 24 in. Built-in Dishw... |
I purchased this MDB8600AWB dishwasher in November of 2003 from Sears to replace an ancient unit that worked great until it broke and could not be repaired. The unit worked fine the first year and 4 months but after that I now wish I never bought it. For months now our dishes have not been coming clean. I have had to run 2-4 2 hour cycles to get any results. After reading the manual on cleaning and upkeep I did what they suggested and ran an empty cycle with Jetdry dishwasher cleaner. Still would not clean the dishes! I have used the Wal-Mart brand of detergent as recommended by Consumer Reports. Cascade complete. Electrasol seems to be an improvement.
Just the other night I got fed up with this $600 POS and the fear I would have to pay a Maytag repair person good money to tell me some crap like I am using the wrong detergent or something. I pulled all the racks out and inspected the arms and tubes for cracks. I disassembled the entire pump, filter, and pump casing in hopes I would find something wrong and be able to replace a defective part. Nope! All of the parts were in excellent condition with no clogging or cracking. The filter had minimal buildup that was easily washed away from the screen. After further inspection and a little cheating on my behalf to get the dishwasher to run with the door open I noticed the wash arms were not rotating during the cycle. I took the arms off of the water tubes and found they are a plastic on plastic design. No washers or bushings to assist in reducing friction. Looking closer I found that this friction has pitted the mounting area so much that the arms drag and will not turn with the water pressure supplied by the units pump. I found that if I removed the top basket or the middle basket from the dishwasher then the remaining arms had enough pressure to them to rotate and spray heavy streams of water. Also, I backed off the screws holding the wash arms to the assembly to reduce friction and allow the arms to turn with the supplied pressure. After all of this, STILL there are dishes and such that do not get clean until after 2-3 cycles.
In my opinion, what's wrong with this machine is:
1: The water pump is way too small to supply useful water pressure.
2: The whole water routing tube design is flawed due to is inability to hold pressure from the pump to the spray arms.
3: The wash arm assembly is a poor design that begins to fail by not turning after a year of normal use.
