Mederma Scar Cream- What it did for my Toddler!!!

Pros: Very, very effective!!!
Cons: There were none in our situation.
The Bottom Line: We were absolutely amazed at what Mederma Skin Cream did for our sons scar. It worked for us.

My middle son was born with a huge birthmark right between his eyes. It was very light when he was first born, but as he got older, the mark got larger and darker.
I felt so bad for my little guy. It didn't bother me personally, that was a part of him. My husband and I couldn't imagine him without his special mark, it was part of what made him so adorable. But, even though that was the case, I was burdened with the thought of all the children that would make fun of him. I could just hear it, "Hey Habeeb, come here!!" You know like the red dot that the Iranians wear as make up. I just didn't want my son to have to go through that. It is hard enough to be a kid and get teased about normal things, let alone have this to worry about.
Well, to make a long story short. At his 3 year check up, our pediatrician felt that maybe we should have it looked at by a pediatric plastic surgeon. We agreed and set up an appointment. Upon on initial visit to the surgeon, we learned that this was not a birthmark at all, it was a mole. Both doctors agreed, especially since it seemed to be getting darker all the time, that we should have it removed.
My son had a really hard time with this. He said, "Mommy, I don't want my "mickmark" removed. That is what he called it, his "Mickmark". We tried to comfort him and explain why we had to do this the best way we knew how to explain to a 3 year old.
Surgery day came, and we took him to the hospital and left our little guy on the table and they rolled him away. (My little guy was no stranger to this. In his three short years of life, this was his 5th surgery) So, he handled it like an old pro which is more than I can say for me. It never gets easy to watch them put your child under.
When the surgery was over, the doctor came to tell us it was a success and we could come back to see him. He warned us of the swelling, but nothing prepared us for what we saw. He looked horrible, like a monster. Both eyes were black and blue. His whole face was swollen and he had this huge bandage between his eyes. It took all I could to hold it together for my little guy. All I wanted to do was to cry for the fact that we had put him through this. My husband reminded me why we made the decision we did, but that still didn't make it any easier.
The doctor gave us a prescription for pain medication and we took our son home.
He recovered quickly from the surgery. By the second day he was running around acting like his old self again. It wasn't until that evening that my son got the first look into the mirror at himself. As my son sat there and starred at himself in the mirror, he began to cry. He said , "I don't want this, I want my mickmark back Mommy!!" =o( Talk about feeling like a heal. We explained to him that his face was not always going to look like this that it was going to heal and everything would be back to normal. He wasn't buying it, he was very, very self conscience of this. Everytime he would start to forget about it and we would go out in public, some well meaning person would walk up and gasp and say, "What happened to your face???" It never failed. He would put his little head down and feel so bad. It was horrible, my heart just broke for him. He thought he was a freak show. =o(
A week later we went for his post op. The doctor seemed very pleased with his work and assured us that it was going to heal completely. We had our doubts with how major this scar looked. I mean it was really bad. But he was very confident that this was exactly how it was supposed to look and that he was very well pleased. He gave us a prescription for "Mederma" Scar cream. At this time Mederma was still a prescription medication and was still pretty expensive. As a matter of fact we had to go to three pharmacies before we found one that carried it. I had never heard of it, but the surgeon told us that they have had great success with it when used properly.
The Doctors direction were:
Gently rub the Mederma on his scar 4 times a day for the next two weeks. He stressed to do it gently for the scar was still healing and if not careful we could tear it.
Then after the two weeks we were to start putting more pressure as we rubbed the Mederma in. And continue to rub harder through the remainder of the time on the medication. We were to continue to do this for six months.
At first it was really hard to do it. My son was very tender there and just didn't want to be touched. Although he didn't want to, we put up with the fight and followed the doctors directions. We new that this six months was the important time, that if this medication was going to do anything, it would happen during this time period.
My husband was the one to apply the Mederma during the first two weeks. I couldn't watch my son scream as the medication was being put on. But after the scar started healing, I was able to do it as well. As a matte of fact, my son started enjoying this, LOL! He would lay on my our lap as we rubbed and we would talk and tell jokes. It was really sweet.
Through this 6 months you could actually feel the difference in the scar. As each day passed, it became more and more smooth. The scar tissue was breaking down from the Mederma and the rubbing.
By Two months, there was a very large noticeable difference. And by six months all you could see is the outline of the scar. I can't believe how well Mederma worked. I know that having a good Pediatric Plastic Surgeon had a lot to do with it, but the Mederma is what made the scar heal so beautifully.
Now a year later, you can barely tell he has a scar there at all. And from a distance you can't see it at all. My son is so happy once again. He still says, "Look Mommy, my scar is all gone!!!"
The surgeon said that by the time he is a teenager (when looks matter the most) you wont be able to see it at all. And I believe it.
I stand behind this product 100%. We are living proof that Mederma works. Nothing can totally remove a scar, only time can do that, but with Mederma, the scar will heal quicker and appear so smooth that you can barely see it. This is a product that really works.
Mederma is no longer a prescription medication. You can get it over the counter at most any drug store. It goes for about $30.00 a tube. And I am here to say it is more than worth it. I would be pay $100 for the results that we got.
