| kuuleimomi's Full Review: Paul Vincent - Meet the Hormones |
Paul Vincent's Meet the Hormones (2002) is probably the most original and by far the funniest book I had to review last year. Though the title and the first page might imply otherwise, the book has to do with biology as much as Dogma the movie with religion all the necessary information for enjoying the story will be provided as you go, though general understanding of hormones might smoothen your transition from your regular lives to the world of hormones.
The story is not exactly about hormones per se. Its about Bill and Evelyn, who are *ahem* unhappy together, but due to marriage vows stuck in one house, one bedroom even. They could care less whats going on in their partners life so much, that in the beginning I had a hard time believing this people live together. They dont care about each other and heaven only knows why they have not given up family therapy long time ago. But they go there religiously and routinely Evelyn gets upset with Bill even more. Bill generally doesnt care. His hormones want one thing Bills wife cant provide, so they seek adventure on the side.
Of all the potential ladies, who most certainly will reject 30-something year old Bill, whos no Valentino by any standards, his hormones choose Suzi. Shes Bills co-worker, nothing fancy, but will do for a one-night stand. He asks her out to dinner to discuss business matter, one or another. At the restaurant he sees Kayleigh, his family therapist. Next thing we (reader, hormones and sleepy Bill) know, he wakes up in her bed with a terrible hangover. Hormones in panic! Even though they cant remember a thing, they decide they like hot Kayleigh better and choose to have an affair with her.
While the story is about Bill, the main characters are his hormones. The book is written in a form of hilarious and bizarre dialogues between the hormones with each other and other people hormones (did you know that Pheromone could leave his home body?). Hormones are generally bored out of their mind and have nothing to do, so they entertain each other in the ways they can. Bills hormones favorite activity while being stuck in traffic jam is to grow boogers and then make Bill pick them and *sic* look at them! Evelyns hormones love to go shopping and then make her feel bad about the stuff she bought, shell put it in the wardrobe and never put it on.
Its not only a fun read, but a very educating one, too. Both men and women can learn a lot about each other. It turned out that female hormones have a schedule they follow in their pranks they follow the moon (eh, periods, anyone?). Male hormones dont have any system at all, they do whatever they want to. If you think its unfair and the hormones have too much unlimited freedom, then theres a story for you. Due to some accident Bill had to use drugs that neutralized his hormones. He calmed down as itd been intended, but has become maniacs victim, while hormones could only watch. I learnt to love and appreciate my own hormones. Next time Im into crashing the furniture, Id rather wink at my fellas inside me and treat them to a kosher peanut butter sandwich.
Meet the Hormones is a witty black comedy that you wouldnt want to put down.
