| xiphoid's Full Review: Microtel Inn Rochester Victor Ny |
I was planning a visit to my boyfriend's family home for the holidays, but I wanted to get a hotel room so that we could have a place to get away from things at the end of the day. My main concern was money, and when I saw that I could get a room for $40/night with my AAA rate, I was sold. I was also familiar with the chain, as I had stayed at the Albany location and been pleasantly surprised.
Location
Travel
The hotel has a very convenient location for travelers - it is right off of route 96 in Victor, which is right by 90/490, so it's easy to get around, and a quick ride to Rochester and the airport, if that's where you're headed. My boyfriend lives in Fairport, and it was about a 10 minute ride.
Nearby
There are several restaurants within walking distance - Chili's, Denny's, and some fast food. You will also be a short distance from several shopping centers, including Wegmans and the Eastview Mall. You will have plenty of opportunities to shop!
The Hotel
The hotel has a clean outside appearance, and is very easy to find. There was ample parking available, and several entrances - but make note that there is not an elevator. So, if you need an easy entrance, be sure to request a first-floor room.
When you walk in, the front desk and seating areas are clean and well-kept, offering a nice first impression. The front desk is manned 24 hours a day, and the staff was friendly and helpful. For security, the front door locks during overnight hours, but you can still get in with a room key.
Another nice feature is that the hotel is all indoor. I don't like hotels that have outdoor entrances to rooms, so that was a very big plus for me.
Amenities
The hotel offers a free continental breakfast, which consisted of apples, oranges, juice, milk, cereals and bagels - although, we went at the very end, so there may have been more. Coffee is available 24 hours a day, and there is a kitchen and dining area for guests.
There is also free wireless internet for all guests, free local phone calls, and an internet computer located in the lobby for guest use.
Rooms
Our room was a non-smoking room (75% of the rooms are non-smoking) with one queen bed. I believe there are suites available, but we got the basic reservation.
When we first walked in, I thought the room was a bit small - smaller than any other hotel I have been to. However, after giving it some thought, I realized that there really wasn't a reason for it to be any bigger. It had one queen bed, with nightstands on either side, a mirror at the head of the bed that was a dark tint and ran the length of the wall - I am assuming it was to help the room appear larger. There was also a mini-desk and chair, a window seat with drawer space and climate control unit below it, and a wardrobe with TV on top. The bed only had 2 pillows, but the staff gladly provided two more for us. All in all, the room was clean and seemed fresh, and that's really most important.
The bathroom was a typical hotel bathroom. There was hand soap, shower soap, shampoo and lotion. The towels were few, but again, the staff provided more when we asked.
Sleeping in the bed was also a typical experience - the bed was mostly firm, which is what we like, and the pillows were moderately firm as well. I am too OCD to use the hotel blankets, so it is the first thing to be removed when I get into a hotel room. So, we slept with the sheets and the fleecy blanket that is usually under the comforter - it wasn't very heavy, but it was sufficient.
Other Info
I know that Microtel has a rewards program that allows you to earn a free stay every 10th visit. I am not a member, but if you're a traveler who is looking for something simple and low-cost that is not sleazy, I imagine it could be a great advantage for you.
Who should stay here?
I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for the best you can get for the money. Honestly, at $40 per night, I really don't think you can go wrong. The hotel is clean, the staff is nice, and the amenities are definitely worth the cost. The rooms are simple, but offer everything you will need, and anything else you could want is nearby.
