| strategery's Full Review: Bob Ciaffone and Jim Brier - Middle Limit Holdem P... |
You see it on the Travel Channel. You see it on Fox Sports and ESPN 2. Celebrates play it, pro's play it, everyone's playing it. 'It'is Texas Hold 'Em that beguiling poker game where a player can at any moment shove all of her or his chips in and announce, " I'm all in." Mike Sexton calls it, "The game that takes five minutes to learn and a lifetime to master."
Well, it takes a lot longer than five minutes to master. There's a whole cottage industry developed around teaching poker enthusiast how to play better poker.
One of the very best poker books on the market is Middle Limit Holdem by Bob Ciaffone and Jim Brier. Bob is a well respected poker coach and Jim was one of his star pupils. This book sprang out of their correspondence as they discussed various hands of hold 'em.
The book is a very complete text on limit hold 'em. It covers such aspects as betting structure, position, and deception. All the different rounds of betting are covered individually. Over 400 hand examples are given to more clearly illustrate the authors' points.
The hand examples are the core of book. Bob and Jim typically begin a chapter with a few pages of introductory text and then follow with page after page of hand examples. They give the reader a situation such as flopping top pair with a good kicker and ask, " What do you do?" The reader thinks through the problem and comes up with a solution she or he can compare to the authors' solution. Their answers are very complete and enlightening.
This book would benefit both the novice as well as the more seasoned hold 'em player. A beginner might want to read Winning Low Limit Hold 'em by Lee Jones first but with minimal experience Middle Limit Holdem should be a valuable learning tool.
