| pcomsec's Full Review: Midol Maximum Strength 80 Caplets Menstrual Formul... |
I have suffered from cramps pretty much all my life, at one point I was even on prescription medication for them. During a few "rough" years (i.e., divorce, moving) either the cramps weren't so bad (maybe God figured he'd give me a break seeing as I had so much other cr*p on my plate) or I just had other more painful things to deal with. So I never got the prescription refilled.
However, within the past two years, my cramps have been getting worse. I decided before I called the doctor or gynecologist, who I just knew would want to do the sensible thing and give me a full exam, I would self medicate. (Hey, I'm not saying I did the right thing.)
Actually, my boyfriend, who truly suffered along with me (cause, if I ain't happy, ain't nobody happy), suggested Midol. I think his exact words were "Isn't there some, you know, um girl stuff, you can take?" To which I screamed "No! It won't work!!" and some several more choice words that I can't repeat here. I can't understand why, but at this point, he bolted out of the house, with the dogs pawing furiously at the front door trying to follow him.
Surprisingly, about a half hour later he returned with a bottle of Maximum Strength Midol in his hand. (I figured he'd be gone for oh, 4-5 days depending on when he thought it would be "safe" to return.) He begged me to please try the Midol. I did but only because I felt a little guilty about the way I acted earlier. But I just knew it wouldn't work. Well for the first (ha, ha) time in my life, I was wrong! I couldn't believe it! Within 25 minutes or so, I actually felt better.
Come to find out, he had gone to the local Eckerd drugstore and asked the (male) pharmacist what he (the pharmacist) would suggest for cramps. The pharmacist suggested Midol.
That's the good part - it worked. However, there are some side effects. The main side effect when I take Midol is, I can't sleep. Not just I can't sleep one night -- I don't sleep until I stop taking it. Needless to say, by the end of 4-5 days, I am bouncing off the walls, but exhausted. At least I am cramp free.
I checked the box to see if it mentioned sleeplessness as a side effect. Well it did, but in the same paragraph, it also mentioned that the medicine may make you drowsy(!). It said one dose of Midol (2 tablets every 4 hours) had the same amount of caffeine as one cup of coffee.
Coffee has nowhere the effect on me that this does, or else I'd be a lot more chipper in the morning at work.
It also said to avoid alcohol and don't mix with sedatives and tranquilizers. Well, I must admit that if I am on one of these "Midol-binges" on the weekend, I have resorted to having a glass of wine or 2, thinking it would bring me down enough to sleep. Nope, doesn't work.
Bottom line for me is, it works and I will keep taking it. And my boyfriend, doll that he is, always make sure I have at least one box in the closet. Of course, I'm not sure if he's doing it because he wants me to be comfortable, or it's more for his self-preservation. But if I have to choose between cramps or no sleep, well, that's why I have cable - there's always something on.
