When it's a cactus!
A friend had to move and decided she didn't have room to take her cactus plants...so I inherited 15 of the spiny, needle sharp little buggers. The problem was they weren't so little any more and needed transplanted to bigger pots.
I needed a plan!
After much deliberation with myself...I assembled the equipment.
1. Pots...check
2. Small spade...check
3. Kitchen tongs...what? You didn't think I was grabbing them with my hands did you?...check
4. More potting soil...Uh Oh.
Off to the store I went
I had no clue that there was a potting soil for cactus, let alone several brands of it. I chose a name that had performed well for my houseplants and garden, Miracle-Gro. At my local store, I paid $5.49 for the 8 quart bag of soil, then went back to the drawing board...errr...kitchen table.
Miracle-Gro Cactus, Palm and Citrus Soil
This is a soil that has a fast draining action to allow your slow-growing plants, in my case cactus and succulents, to take in the water they need and release what they don't, to help prevent rot.
Miracle-Gro plant food is included in the soil. Do not add more, as you may end up burning the roots of the plants...resulting in...dead plants. As soon as the plants are situated in the soil they start feeding on the plant food, helping them to grow strong roots and healthy, ummmmmm, spines!?!?
I have to admit, I'm a rose bush person and this foray into cactus world has me at a loss for some terminology.
What I do know, is that the cactus are doing extremely well since I re-planted them a few months ago. Two of them have even bloomed. I know it has more to do with the Miracle-Gro Cactus Palm and Citrus Soil than with me. All of the cactus are green and growing with only minimal care and the occasional watering from me.
Well not all...I did manage to kill one. How was I supposed to know it had toothpick size spines that stung worse than a colony of fire ants? Yep, I dropped the Old Man Cactus during transplant and had to give him a decent burial.
Recommendation
If a non-cactus person like me can use Miracle-Gro Cactus Palm and Citrus Soil with such great results, I have to like it. This soil has performed it's job well, giving me, dare I say, beautiful cactus.
My highest recommendation? When I need to re-pot these cactus, I'll buy more Miracle-Gro Cactus Palm and Citrus Soil!
