I happen to actually be friends with the band ... and can shed some light on the nationality. While based in Rotterdam, the band is a multi-national blend with representation from Germany, Italy, Finland and, of course, the Netherlands.

Their live shows are great -- well worth checking out if you have a chance.

Oh yes...and I could have confused all the "darker" kinds of music. I really know little about gothic or black metal or whatever...

In my mind they are all jumbled together quite honestly.

Evanescence? That sounds too much like pop to me. I don't like it at all...

But then again, I can only comment on the four or five song's I've heard. PLUS, the vocals remind me a heck of a lot of Linkin Park which is NEVER a good comparison. You know, one singer and one speaker/rapper. Blech :) The Dreamside is definitely better than that.

Hi Brian, I'm going to jump in here if you don't mind.

If you received and like In Nomine Noctis, you most likely would like Mirror Mirror. No guarantee mind you but pretty sure.

Well like you said, it's not your bag (showing my age) and at least you didn't hate it and overall found it pleasant.

This was great fun, getting another's slant on the music I like.

By the way from your description of what you think Gothic music is like, you may have it confused with Death/Black metal which gives me creeps too!

Evanescence is Gothic also. I know you don't care much for it but how would you compare the two?

Happy Listening, OMM

Thanks for the comment.

I understand your confusion about the style changes. I like change within certain boundaries, but when songs jump from metal here to electronica there to prog rock over there I get confused about a band's identity. Not to say it doesn't sound good--it does--but just a bit confused about where to file a band away mentally.

And yeah--I was a bit afraid of the album to start with. But the album itself wasn't at all frightening nor was Dreamside.

They seem to have a ton of support in Germany (even a German-language option on their site) but from what I can tell according to mailing addresses and the like the band is indeed from Holland. Funny that :)

Very nice review, girl. I'll have to listen to Mirror Mirror again - I haven't for a couple months - to see if I agree with your points. (the fact that I like the album more than you is a given)

I was confused by one point you made though. You didn't seem to like the style changes, where many reviewers (not me, if the music is good, more of the same is fine, like Evergrey) complain when the songs sound too much alike and did you really think of this music as frightening?

Well anyway you have a heavier version of Bjork if you get tired of her.

Thanks for writing the review, I going to add you to my WOT, oops your there. Well I'll do something else for you.

Thanks for the comment. Funny about cohesion. I agree--I did appreciate large sweeping and stark changes stylistically across albums even when I was at 200 or 300. But now, well, my numbers are growing (700 or so now) and that's so not the case...if I wanted Bjork I'd listen to Bjork.

But this band really wasn't at all frightening...

Despite your hesitation, you do an intriguing writeup; perhaps i'd like this band. I find the stylistic cohesion thing is something that we value more as our collections of music get larger. When i only had a few dozen, or even a couple of hundred, albums, i really _liked_ bands that were able to pull off several styles that didn't go together; after all, they might be almost the only music in each style that i had! Now my collection is huge, and if a band has several styles, that's still good, but i do indeed prefer them to tie everything together.

cheers, and say hi to daumco for me,
- Brian
