| TSomes's Full Review: Mississippi Mud Black & Tan 1 Quart |
Everything in life is not black and white as is evident by Mississippi Mud Slow Brewed Black & Tan beer.
I was looking for something different, looking to walk on the wild side of life. Looking for something that was not your mainstream brew. As I stood there scanning my local stores cooler, the selection of bottles all seemed to the same brown tweleve-ounce containers. Labels and contents seemed to all melt into one. Then I saw it, a tan jug with a brown neck. Moonshine, I had found Moonshine in Connecticut!
Mississippi Mud, I had no idea what I was in for but I knew I had found my adventure for the night. I have never bought mud before so I paid for my brew and left with my brown paper bag. I only hoped that the Feds were not out as headed home, maneuvering the back roads, my jug concealed beside me.
The Makers of Mississippi Mud
The Arizona Beverage Company of Lake Success, New York Success produces the Mud. The same company that produces one on the best selling brands of bottled ice tea also makes this unique brew.
John Ferolito and Don Vultaggio, two guys that took the beverage industry from its black and white image to one of color and diversity founded the Arizona Beverage Company in 1992. Initially offering ready-to-drink teas and juices, Arizona was the first to market mass-produced bottled Ginseng, Green and Herbal Teas. Arizona was also an industry leader by introducing an alternative to the standard twelve-ounce container. Arizona Beverages now makes over 30 different teas, coffees, cocktails, juice drinks and other beverages. Arizona Brewing's first foray into the beer market has produced another industry first, a pre-mixed Black and Tan in a unique sixteen-ounce jug.
What's in the Jug? Mud?
Mississippi Mud is based on an 18th century English custom of blending pale and dark beers. Arizona's Black & Tan is a combination of English Porter and Continental Pilsner. The Mud is brewed to preserve the characteristics of the two beers while providing a truly unique taste sensation. Mississippi Mud is available in both 32oz jugs and 16oz, 4-pack jugs.
The slug from the jug.
While it may look like a jug it does have a wide-mouth twist cap. Twisting the cap I find myself truly mystified as to what is in store. The wide-mouth allows for a whiff of a sweetish malty aroma.
The beers pours out revealing a brown color and produces a deep thick light brown head. This beer does in fact look about the color of clear muddy water. Not exactly an appealing visual as I get ready for my first taste.
The beer's head has filled more than half the glass and I get nothing but foam on my first try. Wow! Flavors of chocolate, coffee are easily identified and a nutty finish give hints of things to come. This beers foamy head has more flavors than many beers I have tried.
The beer is slightly more than your average medium bodied brew. The beer features a nice amount of the Pilsner's carbonation that immediately gives way to the amazing flavors of the Mud. The same chocolate and coffee flavors are very evident in the taste. This is not what I had expected! This is a very unique and good beer.
Lovers of lite beers may not find this appealing but if you are looking for a beer that has many of the fine qualities of a Pilsner and the flavor and body of a Porter, your ship has come in. This is not a beer that will be consumed in large quantities. The flavors and mild sweetness of this beer beg for slow consumption and time for appreciation and reflection. What began as a purchase of a product because of an interesting container has opened my eyes to a beer that will definitely become a fixture in my icebox.
