Crayola Model Magic resembles modeling clay except that Crayola made it way cooler!
My kids adore it! I mean really and truly love it. They ask for it in their Christmas lists, tease for it at the store and smile excitedly when I take out a few pouches for them to play with.
We first came across Crayola Model Magic over 2 years ago when my daughter had to make a "3-D" volcano for a science project. Being in the first grade, the teacher wasn't expecting a project to rival that of grad students, but boy, was she surprised!
There were three things that appealed to me about the Model Magic.
1. Crayola name
2. "No Mess Modeling Material"
3. Air Drying
What appealed to me most was the label "No mess modeling material". Now, if that were true it would be worth its weight in gold. (Come to think of it at $5.99 per pack, each pack being a single color, I think I paid the market price for gold boullion.)
As soon as the kids tore open the foil sealed pouches, they had a blast. The material is spongy, lightweight and downright fun to work with. It lacks the toughness of modeling clay, so it doesn't require hours of kneading and warmth from your hands to make it pliable. It Kind of squishes out of the way, but is not wet, only ever so slightly moist.
It comes in six colors red, yellow, blue, green, black and white. (You can purchase it by the pack, or in harder to find 2 pound tubs that have four colors, red, yellow, blue and white and retail for $20.)
I have found the Model Magic to be great and true to the "No mess" claim. I am aware that some other people have claimed that the color bled, but I only found that to be true when the material got wet, not during normal use.
The material dries very quickly. Depending on the size of the project and the temperature that day, it could dry in as little as 20 minutes, or normally 45 minutes- 1 hour.
I really like that the material does not require a special procedure to dry it, such as oven baking. (The volcano that stood 1 foot tall and took 3 1/2 pounds of Model magic dried overnight.)
Also, the Model Magic can be painted or glued when dry, to enhance the finished project.
