I got the Crayola Model Magic for my 3 year old daughter because I had seen it advertised on TV and looked at it in the store and I was curious as to what it was.I actually got this for free on the internet with a gift certificate that one of the toy stores was giving away-so even if I did not like it -it did not cost me anything. The regular price is 5.99 for this little kit, and being that my daughter loves play doh so much I figured we would give this a try.
This kit came with 1 one ounce bag of white modeling material,1 half oz bag of red and one half ounce of blue modeling material,a little rolling pin,a plastic knife,a trimmer to make fancy edges and 3 cut out forms(heart, elephant and another one that could be a hippo or a dog-they are also made of plastic)and an instruction book with tips on how to make different things.
So my daughter and I sat at the kitchen table and opened the kit up,at this point she is very excited. The modeling clay which comes in little foil packages is easy to open,I opened it and I was surprised, the modeling material felt like a cross between play doh and silly putty. It is very soft, spongy and pliable, and you can stretch it and it won't crumble or fall apart like play doh does.It does not stick to hands or clothing and it is safe and non toxic and a big plus in my book is there is no smell to it,play doh's smell is sometimes overpowering to me.There is however a warning on the package that the colors in the modeling clay may stain.I called Crayola and they said if it gets on say light colored rugs they cannot guarantee that it wont stain, which is not a big deal to me because we only use this and play doh in the kitchen at my daughters little table.
The nice thing about this modeling material is that you can make all different things with it and then let it air dry for 24 hours and what ever you made is for keeps. The material when air dried becomes harder and stays in the position you put it.We made a couple of bracelets for my daughter and used the cut outs supplied to cut out a heart and they are exactly as we made them,my daughter now has her own little bracelets to play with that she made herself.
If you are making something like say a snow man where pieces of modeling clay need to stick together then you can reinforce it with a little glue to make sure your project stays together. There is a warning on the package to keep it away from open flame,so don't make candle holders from the material, and do not put it into the stove, microwave or kiln.
A drawback of this set is once you open the little foil packages you have to use the modeling material in one sitting because the foil packages do not store the material for future use,so we only open 1 bag at each setting. They do sell other colors and sizes at most stores and the colors can be mixed together to form other colors if you desire.
My daughter loved using this material and played for about an hour with it before we decided to make the little bracelets and heart for her,and she also wanted a ball so the leftover from the one package we opened was made into a small ball that she can bounce-even after it hardened it bounces pretty high because this material is so light and spongy.
I really like this product because like play doh it enhances my daughters creativity and is even better that play doh in the sense that what ever they make can be kept -it will not harden and fall apart as play doh does.I am not saying we will stop using play doh but ,I can assure you that the Crayola Modeling Magic material will be present in our household from now on.
