Pros: Nice Shamano Shifter/Gears, excellent construction quality, well balanced bike for the money.
Cons: Front Fork Spring is non-adjustable. Weak rims. Not ready to ride out of store.
The Bottom Line: Excellent bike for the money. It's few short commings are outweighed by it's strong points including price, components, and balance.

| slartibart's Full Review: Mongoose Aluminum Mountain Bike XR-100 |
I just picked this bike up about a week ago. I've ridden it every day since and I am very impressed.
This is my first full suspension bike. I have ridden mostly BMX style bikes in the past.
This bike is not a world class downhill bike, nor does it make any claims as such. What you get with the xr-100 is an unbelieveable list of components for the price.
And those components are very well matched, unfortunately the depatment store I bought my bike from did a poor job with tuning. It was assembled properly- the wheels and crank and everything like that were bolted on solid- but the bike was very much out of tune, with the following problems:
chain was not properly lubricated several links were frozen
front and rear derailers were not properly aligned
brakes were not aligned properly
tires were underinflated
But I can't say I expected much more from my local wal-mart.
Be forewarned that if you get an XR100 you are on your own when it comes to service. If you do not have the patience or mechanical ability to DIY, a local bike shop can make sure your bike is tuned and proprerly assembled for about $30.
Once all of the bugs are worked out, this is an excellent bike. Older style Shimano components and gears shift smoothly and precisely. Suspension is soft, tuned for smoothing out rough trails, but stiff enough to provide stability.
I am just getting confortable enough on this bike to jump it (just a foot or two off the ground). It's amazing landing on a full suspension bike -nice cushy action, word of caution though, keep your weight back!
On more than one occasion I've landed too far forward compressing the front suspension and nearly eating it.
I would recommend this bike to anyone who is just getting into mountain biking, or doesn't want to spend a ton of cash to get a good bike for occasional riding around the neighborhood or at the local park.
Another cool thing about this bike is it's built on an excellent aluminum frame that can be upgraded overtime with better parts.
