cygnus-x1's Full Review: Motorola Talkabout T5200 (14 Channels) Two Way Rad...
FRS (Family Radio Service) is quickly becoming the standard in communication for outdoor enthusiasts. These radios are a lot cheaper than buying a handheld cb and are easier to use. All FRS radios have about 2 mile range, regardless of brand. This is the max allowed without an FCC license.
I bought the Motorola 5200 to use when I go off-roading with friends. These radios have 14 channels, and 38 subcodes for each channel. The subcodes allow you to "fine tune" your frequency to filter out other people on the same channel. For instance, everyone in a group could set their radios to Channel 5, Subcode 10 and chances are your group will be the only ones on that particular combination.
I chose this model because it has the subcodes (not all models do) and they also have a handy battery meter so you can tell how much battery life you have left. The range is about two miles if there are no obstructions in the way (mountains, buildings, etc). They work well on the off-road trails I use out in mountians of VA and West VA, though range is only about a mile when you really get back into the middle of nowhere.
Other features include a solid rubber antenna, and a volume knob on top. The window on the front also lights up for a few seconds when you push the "talk" button - very handy for night use so you can see what channel you are on. The other neat thing is they have a channel lock feature to keep you from accidentally changing the channel in case you bump it, drop it, etc. A very handy feature. Just set the channel and lock it and you're ready to go.
These radios are very easy to use and work very well in the outdoors.
