| onehotchili's Full Review: Mountain Hardwear 2nd Dimension |
Let me confess one thing first... I have always bought expensive down sleeping bags, until this past fall. Why the sudden change of heart? While I really like my 2 Marmot down/Dryloft sleeping bags, they always seem to loose some of their loft after several wet days/nights in the field. Oh sure, I am very careful with them... packing them in water tight stuff sacks, using a good thermarest, and making sure nothing wet gets on them etc. But unless I use a vapor barrier liner, I still find the down getting damp and loosing its loft after 4-5 days. I also find vapor barrier liners really uncomfortable unless it is *really* cold out.
So when it came time to find a 3-season bag (4-seasons in the lower 48 States) I opted for the MH 2 Dimension which I found on sale. While synthetics tend to be bulkier and heavier, the tradeoff for worry-free sleeping is well worth it. I have been able to use my bag for all types of weather without worrying about it loosing its loft. I have literally jumped in my bag with all my wet, iced over clothes on, to find them and my bag fairly dry the next morning. Just try doing that with a down bag. In addition, I have found that the bag when used with a compression sack, can pack down really small... almost as small as my down bags. I also really like the little pocket that the bug netting comes in... I keep my watch in there for those pre-dawn alpine starts.
My only complaint is that I wish it had a collar to block out cold air from entering my bag around my neck and shoulders. I also wish the zippers were a little easier to use since they can get stuck sometimes. But those are the only nits that I can pick on about this bag... which otherwise is a terrific value.
