One of our best finds when we traveled in France, during the years you actually could afford to buy anything to bring home, was Moutarde de Meaux Pommery . We first tried it in a restaurant somewhere in the countryside when it was served with a lamb dish we had ordered. The rich nutty taste was something we immediately noticed and asked our waiter about it in the very broken French we attempted to speak. To show us what we were talking about he brought a crock of this Mustard to our table and told us we could purchase it in the food markets everywhere.
So we did and brought home our first Crock of this very special mustard. It was quite a large crock, and contained a good amount of mustard that lasted us a while. I used it on chicken, making a blend of the mustard with fresh Rosemary, Thyme, a bit of lemon and olive oil and even on salads, combining it with wine vinegar and oil. We love it on lamb and fish and it really enhances all the flavors of the food you eat it with, even smeared on a hotdog!
A little History
Moutarde de Meaux Pommery. It is said that this mustard has been eaten by the Kings of France since 1632 when the ingredients were first put together by a religious order of monks
it was called the Abbots Mustard and later presented to the wealthy Pommery family in 1760. Since then this closely guarded recipe was kept a secret for all these years and has become one of the post popular and well known mustards in the world.
Rightfully so since the flavors are so unique with the whole grain mustard seed providing a truly tasty and amazingly delicious flavor along with a great aroma of natural goodness.
They use all natural ingredients, nothing artificial and you can taste that rich whole grainy natural flavor in every bite
whether smeared on a sandwich or used in any dish which calls for mustard.
It comes in an attractive crock just as it has for centuries and looks terrific when placed on any table setting. Some people call it the mustard of gourmets, I call it the mustard for exceptional taste for everyone and every kind of good eating.
Moutarde de Meaux Pommery is a favorite ingredient used in meal preparation by French chefs as well as chefs from around the world and though I don't consider myself a great chef by any means, it certainly is a favorite of mine.
The only problem is that it is a bit costly. Until recently I had to go to special gourmet markets to find it where it was sold for about $20.00 for a 17 ounce container. Though I have to admit it is costly, the good thing is that this large crock of Moutarde de Meaux Pommery does lasts for quite a long time. Now though I see it selling in grocery stores and occasionally goes on sale
That is when I stock up on a few jars.
All in all, we really do love our Pommery mustard and enjoy the taste of France right on our very own table.
