Like an old friend
I clearly remember the first time I saw a Movado. It was a TV ad for the Museum Watch back in the late seventies and it left quite an impression on me. When I decided to treat myself to an expensive watch ten years ago there was no question about which one it would be. Off to the jewelry store I went and I brought home a Movado Museum Watch Sports Edition. Its got a stainless steel band and casing accented by gold dots and a black face with gold hands. I love this watch.
Simple and sleek
This is the polar opposite of the big clunky Swiss watches. The watch itself isnt much thicker than the band, nor is it much wider. Its form fitting, understated and with just the barest of essentials provided. A minute hand and an hour hand is all there is. No numerals or extras of any kind save for a gold dot which indicates the location of twelve on the otherwise completely black face. The small adjustment knob completes the gold accent package. Being a battery operated quartz piece means you just set it once and thats it. The stainless band is secured by the smoothest of butterfly clasps.
Bragging rights and some things we dont speak of
The Museum Watch is water resistant but no depth claim is made so be careful with it. As far as overall construction quality, this watch is top notch. I broke one of the band pins once while adding a link but it was easily replaced for just a few bucks. Ten years of ownership has taught me to expect a three year lifespan on the battery for the watch and I strongly recommend letting a jeweler change it.
Movado is a Swiss name with roots dating back to 1881 hell, it even says that on the back of the watch. A very close look at the face of it will reveal swiss Movado quartz in the tiniest of fonts under the six position. So small in fact that you cant see it from a foot away at least I cant. A quick scan of their website will give you hints of Swiss lineage but persistent digging will reveal the truth. Movado calls Paramus home. As in Paramus, New Jersey. Those who need the European allure to be happy with a watch will likely be disappointed by this revelation, but not me. Jersey heritage or not, this watch is hot shit.
Last thoughts
This watch will never go out of style and will always be the perfect watch to wear whether going black tie or shooting hoops down at the schoolyard. If I were limited to one all-around watch Id choose this one hands down. Its simplicity, dependability and elegance all rolled into one sexy wristwatch.
