| unk1911's Full Review: Movin' Out On Broadway |
I am not a connoisseur of the theatrical scene by any stretch but I thought Movin' Out was a great performance with much energy and a great musical score. Using body language alone and without saying a single word, the actors were able to convey the plot of the story exceptionally well.
I thought the props were simple and left more to be desired for especially when I think back to Aida and The Graduate, where stage decoration was more elaborate and awe-inspiring.
Another thing I liked about this performance was the placement of the band -- on top of the stage. This was very clever and vaguely remeniscient of those outdoor New York City parking garages where they hoist your car up on metallic struts in an effort to conserve space. The band was situated on a metallic platform right above the stage.
There were also some patriotic themes mixed in -- the military servicemen fold the American flag and hand it to Judy, the "widow" and she grieves James' death. (not sure whether they were actually married or not before the war but she still acts out the role of a widow very nicely)
I also liked the flashback/hallucinatory sequence when the souls of the dead soldiers rise up to dance as we ask ourselves why they had to die at all, etc.
So overall, I thought it was a very good musical and well worth the price of admission $50 (you can get 50% discounted tickets at 47th St / Broadway at the TKTS booth on Duffy sq.) Also recall that the theatre where Movin' Out plays is very small so even if you get less than optimal seats you will be fairly close to the stage and will be able to see everything.
