New England winters are dry and it can get quite arid in our house. We do use humidifiers but everyone still ends up with dry skin. This is particularly true for baby whose face can get quite red and chapped.
I found this product at drugstore.com. I liked the packaging and the fact that it was for lips and cheeks so I decided to check it out.
WHAT YOU GET
A very small amount of moisturizer for baby. The package only has 10 grams or 0.35 ounces of moisturizer. The packaging is like a stick deodorant. It is a solid in an oval container. As you use the moisturizer, you push up a lever in the back of the package to raise the moisturizing stick a little higher.
The product itself is a light tan in the container but goes on clear. It has a very light powder-like fragrance that is really nice for babies and I really like.
The package says this "hydra-stick" with cold cream is for lips and cheeks.
OUR EXPERIENCE
Well, first off, the most important thing is that the product works really well. Baby's checks were red and chapped and after applying the moisturizer once in the morning and once a night, baby's skin significantly improved and her cheeks were back to a normal pinkish color within two days. If I put too much on, baby gets a faint greasy sheen. Moderation in application is the key here.
I like the fact that this product is sold as a solid rather than a cream. Our baby is just over four months old and still has the remnants of her rooting reflex. This means whenever you touch her cheeks, she turns quickly to that side. The reflex is meant to help baby root around to find a nipple either for breast or bottle feedings. However, the reflex also makes it hard to apply lotion to baby's cheeks as she quickly moves her head back and forth rooting about. With the stick moisturizer, it is much easier to thinly spread the moisturizer exactly where you need it quickly without getting it in baby's eyes, ears or nose. The packaging alone makes this a great product.
Another thing I really like is the smell of this product. The light powder like scent is really nice and baby seems to like it too.
We are about a month into using this product and still have quite a bit left after using it almost daily. Even though you get a very small amount, it seems like it will last about 3 months. However, we are only using it on baby's cheeks and, very occasionally, lips. We don't use it on other parts of her because it is quite expensive and we have less expensive products that work well on the rest of baby.
INGREDIENTS
I tried to copy the ingredients from the lable but they are written into at least two languages with all kind of parentheticals and teeny print. It was hard to untangle it all. I did the best I could but please don't rely on the list below as being 100% correct.
Castor oil (ricinus communis), oleyl alcohol, hydrogenated vegetable oil, candelilla wax (candelilla cera), polyglyeryl-3 beeswax, mineral oil (paraffinum liquidum), octyl methoxycinnamate, shea butter (butyrospermum parkii), quatermium-18 hectorite, titanium dioxide, fragrance (parfum), tocopheryl acetate, propylene carbonate, water, sodium lauroyl lactlate, carbonex, xantham gum, methylparaben, polyparaben.
PRICE
I paid $8 for this product at Drugstore.com.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
I really like this product. It works well and smells nice. Plus, the packaging is very clever. I think it is worth the money and highly recommend it.
