bmcnichol's Full Review: International Playthings My First I Play Games - B...
I was cleaning out my game closet when I came across a game we hadn’t played for years. My son received International Playthings Baby Chicks in his Easter basket many years ago. Each year we buy my children “real” baby chicks for Easter. We tricked our youngest into thinking these were his baby chicks for the year. Actually he did receive “real” baby chicks that year but he also got a fun new game.
Out of the box Baby Chicks comes with forty two egg shaped cards, four nests, one die and rules. Each egg shaped card has a picture of a baby chick on it. Each baby chick is red, yellow or white. The die is oversize (perfect for smaller hands) and has pictures of different colored hens on it. It has red hens, white and yellow. Baby Chicks is recommended for children three to six and requires two to four players.
Let’s Play
Place all egg cards face down so that no one can see the baby chicks. Place the cards on a pile. Each player takes seven eggs from the pile and places them face down and sits on them like they are trying to hatch them. Each player should also choose a nest and place it in front of them.
The first player rolls the die. All players look at the die and see what color hen has been rolled. It will either be a white hen, a red or yellow. All players stand up and select one of their eggs. Hold your egg in your hand so everyone can see it. If the chick on the egg card selected is the same color as the hen on the die, that player has “hatched” an egg and that player says “bawk, bawk” and places the egg in their nest chick side up. More than one player can hatch an egg during the turn.
If the chick on your egg does not match the color of the die, you need to put your egg card back under your bottom to try and hatch it later.
Play continues with the next player rolling the die and following the above steps.
Play continues until one player hatches five eggs. More than one player can be a winner. If more than one player hatches their fifth egg on the same turn, they are all winners.
Baby Chicks is a fun, silly game to play. It does require color recognition but does not require reading, writing or batteries. (Not requiring batteries is a plus in our house)
When my son was younger, our whole family enjoyed playing Baby Chicks. It is a quick game that always made us laugh while playing. My son would giggle when we had to sit on the eggs to try to hatch them. Pulling this game out of the closet and writing about it has brought back some fond memories.
The only negative to the game and as with most card games, the cards tend to get worn from continuous use.
I don’t recall how much I paid for Baby Chicks but I did find it online at Amazon.com for $14.58.
We think Baby Chicks is a great idea for a gift. It would make a great birthday, Easter or Christmas present.
Our family highly recommends International Playthings Baby Chicks for preschoolers.
