Mitsubishi quality for Generic money

Abstract:
The 91 is a great value for an aperture grill flat-screen CRT. It lacks fancier (more expensive) features like built-in USB, but is tough to beat at the price.
Design:
Well, it’s the tube that matters, but the case is still important for aesthetics and placement. It’s one of the shallowest 19” monitors we’ve used, allowing it easy placement just about anywhere. On average, expect to need just over an inch more “depth” room for it over a 17”. The OSD (on-screen display) buttons are great and can manage just about all of the monitor's functions. With some OSD tweaking, we were able to eliminate the “bowing” and “pin-cushion” effects common to flat-screens. By the way, flat-screens are not the same as flat-panels, which are essentially free-standing laptop screens. The overall look is restrained, but not boring or cheap.
Performance:
One of the first things you may notice are two VERY fine horizontal lines across the screen – those are the dampening wires common to aperture grille monitors, all of which are based on Sony’s Trinitrons. Aperture grill monitors (vs. the cheaper multiple scans) have clearer, deeper images. The 91 has a “fine picture mode” which makes the screen image even better by optimizing contrast and color saturation. If you have a photo of a natural landscape as your desktop pattern, you’ll notice the difference right away.
With .25-.27 dot pitch and nearly unlimited resolutions & refresh rates, the only performance limitations will be those from your video card.
Value:
Great for around $400-450, which represents just over a $100 premium over competing (lesser) models from LG, Samsung, etc. On a side note, NEC and Mitsubishi recently merged their monitor divisions (cf: www.necmitsubishi.com) and NEC has released a nearly identical model called the FE950+. I’ve seen it for $360, which could be the steal of a lifetime.
