| Freak369's Full Review: Neopet Collectible Figurine - Scorchio |
I never intended on getting the Neopet Collectible Figures from Thinkway Toys; when ever I came across them they seemed a little overpriced for what you ended up getting and I never saw the ones that I really wanted. When I was at Wal-Mart and hit the clearance aisle I saw some of these on the shelf for $2.00 - thats less than half the suggested retail price so I decided to snap them up. I really have to stress this before I go any further - these are not the larger three or six inch figurines nor do they have any points of movement to them. All you are getting is a fixed piece that looks cute but doesnt really do anything except look cute. Some online stores are trying to sell these and pass them off as the larger figurines [the ones that comes in multi pack sets] so they can charge more for them. If you are a Neopet addict and are going to look for these online, you better pay attention to the fine print or you will end up getting ripped off. The first time I saw these at Wal-Mart they didnt have many there but when I stopped back to get more notebooks and crayons I checked the aisle again and there were more - including my Scorchio!
Neopet Collectible Figurine - Scorchio
Scorchios are one of the most popular pets at the Neopets website and for a very good reason - they are adorable! I have a hard time picking between the Scorchio and the Shoyru as my favorite pet so please, dont ask me to make a choice. The one that I ended up getting was the red one because it was the only color option that I had. I really wanted the purple one but I guess everyone else wanted it too. I am not sure what colors this was made in but someone at the Neopet message board said that they came in four colors - blue, purple, red and yellow. Dont quote me on that, I am just repeating what someone else said. I am assuming that Neopets and Thinkway are phasing these out since they were in the clearance aisle - or Wal-Mart had an overstock of them and needed to make room. They are still featured at the Thinkway website so its anyones guess as to what is going on with these.
This one stands about two inches tall and has a nice glossy sheen to the body. The wings stick out on the back and they are slightly flexible but they are not meant to be moved around. He has a very cute face with a nice amount of stenciled detail to it but you have to remember that the stenciling will come off of it is handled a lot or gets tossed around. If you want to protect its features keep it out of direct sunlight and if you are ultra paranoid, hit it with a couple of coats of a sealer. Just like the Scorchio at the website, this one has the same body build and facial features except its a lot smaller and doesnt require that you feed it and play with it. The body is made of a hard plastic that is solid so make sure younger kids cant reach this because if they throw it around or at someone it will hurt. Neopets and Thinkway suggest this for kids over the age of four; its not small enough that a child could completely swallow it but it is small enough that its tempting to try to do so.
In a lot of ways this Scorchio looks like the baby version thats featured at the website; that is if you can come across a baby paint brush to paint your pet. I got a little bored with mine and decided that it needed a little something extra so I took a gold Sharpie marker and added some accents to it. I figured it was only two dollars and if I ruined it, it wasnt that big of a deal. It did turn out cute but now I am tempted to try and modify all the ones that I purchased. This comes packaged inside a plastic tube and they did put an excessive amount of tape on the top and bottom of it so have fun trying to open them. There is a small plastic base inside the tube that you can use for a display stand as well as a larger one that supports the bottom of the package. The larger one is made of a thinner plastic and as nice as they were, I threw them out because they were taking up space.
Price
These had a suggested retail price of anywhere from $3.99 to $5.99 depending on where you were looking - some online sites are trying to sell them for more claiming that they are larger than they actually are. There are some figurines that are larger but these have different product numbers on them so please, pay attention to the details if you are ordering them online. As I mentioned, I found these at Wal-Mart in the clearance section for $2.00 a piece which is a nice deal if you can find it. It does come with a Neopet Trading Card [for the Neopet TCG] that you can use to battle or trade. This one came with Faerie Uni card - another one that I didnt have in my collection!
The Bottom Line
For two dollars this is a nice thing to pick up for the Neopet lover in your life. They do make great stocking stuffers so if you come across them on sale or clearance, be sure to stock up on them. These do not come with a rare item code so please dont believe the hype that some online stores are saying about these containing them. In all honesty I dont think I would have purchased these if they werent on sale; they are a nice thing to have if you collect Neopet things or are a fan of the Scorchio but there is no way I would pay full price for these. I am still going to try and get the purple one so for now the red one will have to do ... something tells me that before long a lot more of the Thinkway / Neopet toys will be hitting that sale aisle!
As always, thanks for the read!
