I love the Nike 400cc driver. So why do I have such dislike for the 275cc? The clubs are essentially the same, right?
First of all, a little background on the cc's that go along with the clubs these days. The cc's deal with the size of the club head. The bigger the number in front of the cc, the larger the club head will be. Which brings me to my first problem with the 275cc.
If my math is correct, 275cc's are less than 400cc's. Does this matter to you? Perhaps. Part of the theory of hitting the ball straighter is a larger club head. The club manufacturers have been touting the larger sweet spots that come with the bigger clubs for a number of years now. Whether or not there is any truth to this, or if it is just a marketing scheme, well, I will leave that one up to you. We could argue all day.
What I do know is that a larger club head gives me the confidence to swing harder. Now this is not always a good thing, but if you have confidence in your swing and can hit the ball where you want it to go, it is a good thing. The problem is that Nike has already made the 275cc obsolete by bringing out the newer and larger models of essentially the same club. So, out with the smaller club head.
The problem is even more noticeable when hitting the 275cc right after the 400cc. You get the feeling that the 275cc could easily be a three wood. The size difference is that pronounced.
What did I like? I like just about everything else about the club. I can "work" the ball in every direction. I can hit it high or low. The feel is great and the look is relaxing- thanks to the cool blue tint of the club head. I really do like this club. When I made solid contact I found that gained a few yards and I had little trouble controlling the direction of the various shots.
But, why would I buy a club that is already obsolete? The only reason that I can find is that it is slightly cheaper than the 400cc. Slightly comes to around $50. Is $50 worth a club that will result in a lesser improvement? Not when you are spending $400 anyway.
