rookshark's Full Review: Nike Air Pegasus Running Shoes for Men
I own many running shoes (see many of my other reviews), from lightweight ventilation shoes, trail shoes, regular running, and top shelf cushioning shoes. I bought these shoes mostly on reputation (purchased on eastbay), not from trying them on or having had past experience with this line of shoes. I have used many other Nike running shoes, and to be honest, they usually have style but lack the ease and comfort of use for real running that other brands, such as Asics, generally bring to the table, or as it were, your feet. So, after paying the reasonable discounted price of $40 (uh, retail of $80 or so is not exactly highway robbery in todays market), I was not expecting to be blown away.
Just look at the shoe! Sure, we all know in our brain that looks do not matter (I will skip the deeper lesson here), but we all like to look good even while we are getting the protection/comfort/etc. we want in a running shoe. Or, maybe you just want to look good. If that is the case, look for something flashy elsewhere. Instead, you get bland, everyday looks in this shoe. Perfect for not being noticed. Except if running at dark. Nice 3M reflective patch on three sides of the shoe (none on the inside of your foot, which makes sense when you think about it, people generally not needing to see the inside of your foot to avoid running over you) heel will help visibility for when you really do need to be seen.
Thus my surprise when slipping (ah, that feels good) these shoes on for the first time. I knew this shoes had full length air with a good midsole, but I was not expecting this kind of comfort in a plain jane wrapper. Sometimes it feels good to be wrong. The comfort level in these shoes is comparable to my Asics Gel-Nimbus, which is saying quite a bit. From the start to the end of a run (I usually average 6-10 miles per run) these shoes just feel like a cushiony pillow.
Pillow eh? How about that support? I am a neutral runner, not needing or wanting a great deal of support. This shoe does well for my pot hole filled roads and gravel side roads as far as ankle support. No issues here with any rock bruising or being hurt by running on gravel or whatever. The carbon rubber outsole provides good durability, no worrying about wearing down these shoes quickly, and the waffle tread in the front provides plenty of traction for my needs.
These shoes, the same as the Epinions picture, are predominantly white, however I have yet to clean them even once, and they are not showing a tremendous amount of dirt. The midsoles show dirt most, but really, have done pretty well
The mesh/leather nature of the shoe provides a good balance between warmth and ventilation. I am sure this might not be your shoe for extreme circumstances (dead of winter, or blistering heat of summer), but for me in Central America, I can use it year round, from lows of 50 to highs of mid 90s. I never feel cold or hot in these shoes.
The durability of the shoe is impressive. On the outriggers in the forefoot are some dots, and even those dots are almost all intact, even after probably half the life of the shoe. No other abnormal wear issues or deterioration of the materials the shoe is made of. Some sloppiness in assembly though with glue visible in a few parts, but unfortunately for Nike, this tends to be par for the course.
Downsides? Not really. I could nit pick, ask for more technical features and fancy acronyms, but really, this simple formula works for hard core runners. If you are a typical Nike running shoe customer (fashion over form), obviously this is not your shoe. Nike is reaching more to the serious runner instead, even following Asics strategy of leaving this shoe on the market for longer periods, and updating it year after year to cater to the same market. The only other thing I can see is if someone over or under pronates, or needs more than average support, then this shoe would also not be the best for them, although with the durability in this shoe I have experienced, even someone with pronation problems could wear the shoe for comfort, it would just not provide the correction they need/want, and would wear more than other similar shoes.
Possibly some might see this shoe as heavy, although for me the cushioning almost helps propel you as you run. Definitely not a lightweight, but probably average in comparison to other shoes I have (lighter than the Adidas Ultraride, heavier than Climacool or Gel-Nimbus)
I could see myself getting another pair of these when on sale, and when I wear out this pair. Casual use of these shoes would be great as well for comfort, and the mostly white nature of the shoe is great for jobs where such shoes might be required (hospitals jump to mind, although that red Nike swoosh might be too much for some people).
