truedat74's Full Review: Nikon N65 35mm Film Camera
I purchased this camera because I had always heard that Nikon's had the best when it came to SLRs. I needed an auto focus that I could improve upon later, but didn't have that much cash to spend. I did my research and found the N65 to be worthy.
I am not going to get into great technical detail here. You have many more epinions that include that. I am only going to give you my experience with it thus far.
The pictures are great, but one has to remember that it isn't the camera that takes the photos ... it is the photographer! Still the fact that I have control over the shutter and the aperture really gives me the creativity control that I need. I find that I either use the camera in Auto mode or in all Manual.
I love the fact that it is an auto focus camera that I can use just about any new auto focus lens on. I love that it is small and lightweight so it doesn't intimidate like a big bulky outfit would. I can take professional photos, but still maintain the simple point and shoot quickness.
Now, the bad stuff. Remember that this camera is ONLY for an amateur to serious amateur. If you need to take studio portraits, it doesn't have a pc plug for a cord you would have to use a slave unit. The flash sync is 1/90th so it is better then some older manual cameras but still not a real professional grade.
The lens that came with it (28-80mm zoom) is great but still an average lens. I had problems with it after only using it for about 3 months. I had to send it back to the shop that I bought the outfit from and they just replaced the lens for me and sent another one back.
The latch that clicks and holds the camera back shut broke suddenly when I was closing it and here is where I came into troubles. I sent the camera back to where I purchased it from since it was still under warranty. They ordered the part (the camera back) and Nikon seemed to drag their feet in getting it to them. I sent the camera in November and did not get it back until just a week ago ... beginning of March. It only took a couple of days to get back to me after they finally received the part, so be weary if you need any parts for you Nikon. It may take a few months.
There are a few places on the camera that are still metal like the mounting ring which is nice, but beware that plastic does break and the durability may not be up to your standards if you plan on lugging this into the thick of a forest or anywhere you might bang it against something.
Overall it has been a good experience, but it has left me wanting more. I have become an even more serious amateur that wants to now move into professional circles. I would love to raise right up into a Nikon F100 outfit. That is an amazing camera, but you PAY for it! The Nikon lenses in my opinion are the highest quality in the 35mm realm and hope to continue with them for a long time. Just be prepared with a spare camera if there are any problems.
