| artic00cat's Full Review: Nokia 252 Cell Phone |
Well what is it we are here for? Oh yeah to talk phones but more specifically the Nokia 252 phone. Well I have since taken this phone and replaced it for reasons that will be discussed later on in this review. However I am unable to review the new phone at this time as there is no active posting for the phone in question. The Nokia 252 is in my opinion like a beginner's phone. First off it is Analog technology which has more recently become old news with the introduction of digital services at reasonable rates. Second reason for this belief is that major retail chains carry this phone and are charging $0.01 for the phone with subscription to the service contract. Which is a good deal for anyone looking for there first mobile phone, and it is quite obvious at this point that a person in this situation would also see the price is right!! On top of that the phone carries the name and reputation of "NOKIA" which is a large name in the mobile phone business. So all things seem good at first glance , so you purchase the phone and your service plan , go home and...... As I was saying earlier the phone is very basic. It is not a flip style phone and resembles a shrunken portable phone you would use at home. The Nokia 252 has such features as 6 distinctive rings , ring volume control, backlight LCD , battery life indicator , tower strength indicator , roaming indicator , 75 name phone book , one touch dialing , caller ID , and voice mail capabilities. Nokia boasts the fact that the phone is available in 9 different colors, but good luck finding these replacement covers at your local stores. However there is a complete line of accessories available for this particular phone. Accessories include rapid Cigarette lighter charger , desktop charging stand , belt clip , leather carrying case , leather carrying sleeve , headset kit , vibrating battery , and a complete car kit. However that does not make up for the performance of this phone. I know up till this point I have most of you thinking that the review was written to boast about the phone. Although this is half true it does not ring total and utter truth. Heres why!!!!! The phone itself performs only as well as your service provider is capable of performing due to the amount of cell towers they have etc. So there is no legit gripe I can pin on the phone relating to reception of signal. However the phone it self is not as clear as it should be when it comes to voices heard or projected over the phone. I have had the phone break up on me and get static (attributed to air noise in the area) when I had max. signal according to the phone. This leads me to believe that the noise filtering device they use on the phone is of degraded quality compared to others. Same spot , same service provider , different phone yielded much better results. I also went through two of these phones before replacing it. The first phone I had simply worked the night before and the next day would not power on at all. The battery was fully charged I checked it with a volt meter and it was inserted correctly. When I sent the phone back for service it was so messed up that it was shipped back to the company (Nokia). They were unable to fix the phone either and instead replaced it. Mind you I lost the phone for a whole month at this point. But at least they made good on their product. The replacement phone however gave me no problems up until the point I gave it away. The second phone is still operational and currently being used. The phone being made compact places the buttons for dialing a number very close together , allowing for constant errors while entering numbers. This could be attributed to my clumsiness or poor design. However the more compact you make something the less space available so its a give and take situation. Luckily for the likes of me they included a clear button that allows you to back up either one digit or delete a whole number and start over. It is probably a good idea to save your constantly used numbers in the phone book so all you have to do is hit 01 for example then send to dial somones phone. Although I have not seen much a difference between phones and the way you cycle through the menu systems , it still is sometimes a cumbersome task. This cannot be blamed on this particular phone though as it is relevant to them all. The menu on the 252 include such things as call duration, storage of the last numbers dialed , call timer per call, call timer overall , earpiece volume settings, ringer volume settings, as well as ringer tone settings. Also include as with most phones are the security settings suck as key pad lock , long distance outgoing block, calling card storage, and password protect. Over all as I said in the beginning the phone is a great beginners phone or for someone who plans on limited use. However the analog system is incomparable to the new digital and is thus the reason I got rid of this phone. The 252 is not capable of receiving a digital signal , so if your looking for digital steer away form this phone. Some of the experiences I had with this phone may be related only to myself and thus I cannot give the phone a totally bad rating. However I have heard numerous complaints about the phone besides mine. My advice to you is to look into the kinds and types of phones available and choose wisely the one that best suits you.And if you are specifically interested in being able to accessorize the phone by changing the colors, you may want to think about the Nokia 5100 series instead. These replacement cases of all colors I have seen all over , yet still none for the 252.
