| Plumdogger's Full Review: Nokia 6185 Cell Phone |
The Nokia 6185 is the first wireless phone I have purchased, and I like it so much, that my next phone will be a Nokia also.
First of all, I could not live without my cell phone. But I didn't know that until I had one. As a tennis pro that travels from site to site without the luxury of an office, most of my calls are done on my Nokia. I have never had a call get disconnected that wasn't because of the battery going under (which is my fault for not charging it, not knocking the battery itself), and the calls are almost always crystal clear. The menu is easy to read and operate, and the features of the phone are really cool.
One of the most popular features on all Nokias are the 30 some ringing options. Most of these are completely annoying, and you probably know someone who has used all of them, but this is still a cool feature. Also, there are preset profiles like meeting, outside, silent and normal, all of which that you can customize. There is a calendar, calculator (good for balancing checkbooks), alarm clock, phone list, all sorts of reminders, and even Games! This isn't a Sony Playstation, but they will keep you occupied for a couple of minutes while you wait in the car for your wife or at the airport. My personal favorite is Snake.
The phone is both analog and digital. You can choose which mode you want to use, or you can set it so the phone automatically chooses for you. The battery lasts a really long time, usually 2 1/2-3 days without recharging, but I recommend charging it every night if possible.
This is the thing I love most about this phone:
It's durability. It can take the abuse of being thrown in my tennis bag, or car, and it has even become one of my 14 month daughter's favorite toys. I just put on the keylock and let her play away! She can drop it and it won't miss a beat! It has even been dropped on hard cement courts several times, and still not a scratch!
Now a couple of things I dislike about this phone:
1) Everybody has one. If you hear a Nokia ring you instantly see people check their pocket, purse, and hand. It seems like everybody knows how good this phone is. If that is true why am I writing a review?
2) It is not really compact. It tends to fall out of my shorts pocket (see hard court reference above), or leaves a funny bump in my jeans. I have to take the phone out of my pocket when I sit down, and I hate people who show off their phones, so I get self conscious when it happens. But it looks really cool, and is pretty small in comparison to some phones.
All in all I recommend this phone to people who are looking for a good wireless phone, but don't want to go crazy spending a lot of money.
On another now, I use Sprint PCS as my wireless plan and I am very satisfied with them also. Every time I need assistance they are very willing and able to give it.
Revision October 22, 2000:
A quick note on the charging function of the Nokia 6185. I have only owned this phone for a little over 9 months and the fuse that controls the charging function has blown. This makes charging the phone a hit and miss operation, sometimes it will sometimes it won't. This can be fixed easily, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I understand that this happens often to Nokia phones, but it will not detract me from purchasing another when it comes time.
Revision II August 27, 2003:
I'm not sure if you can even buy this phone anymore but I wanted to share my feeling about this phone after owning it for close to 4 years now. My Nokia 6185 has taken on a very unusual feature... Many times when I press the talk button to answer an incoming call the phone shuts down. This is a very handy feature when my boss is calling, but every other time it is a bit annoying. Also apparently the phone has decided that it is overworked and will turn itself off at random times during use. I have also noticed a severe drop in the reception, and the phone almost always seems to be out of range. I find that very hard to believe since I live in the Washington DC area where there is most likely more cellular coverage than any other place on the planet. I believe that Nokia makes a great product, but in the years since I originally purchased this phone other companies have greatly increased their exposure to the market, and have made equally great products. I'm not sure if I will go with Nokia again, but I will definitely consider them.
