| snowflake224's Full Review: Oggi 7-Piece Canister Set |
How this product came into my life:
My husband and I received the Oggi 7-piece Canister set as a wedding gift. This product is sold at Bed Bath and Beyond for $14.99. We already had a canister set, but it was a cheaply made no name brand. We kept it until the clamps finally broke last month. Once this happened, we hauled this new canister set out of storage.
What I received:
The Oggi 7 piece Canister set is packaged well inside its box; with the use of other smaller boxes, styrofoam, cardboard, and rubber bands nothing broke during its vacation in our storage unit.
The set comes with seven white ceramic canisters in varying sizes to fill with baking products, other kitchen items, or whatever you fancy. There are four spoons that come with the set and each goes with one of the four larger canisters; each has a ceramic slot on the side to store the spoon.
The canisters each have a chrome clasp to seal and lock the canister. The hinge allows for a rectangular ring to lift up and slide over a chrome ring attached to the lid. An easy to push chrome level sticks out and is pushed down to close and lock. A silicone gasket surrounds the inside of each lid to ensure an air tight seal.
Measurements:
Volume:
The largest canister can hold 50 ounces, the second largest can hold 42 ounces, the third largest can hold 36 ounces and the fourth largest can hold 26 ounces. The third smallest canister holds 7 ounces, the second smallest holds five ounces, and the smallest canister holds 3 ounces.
Height:
Each of the seven canisters vary in height. The largest canister is 8 inches tall, the second largest is 7 ½ inches tall, the third largest is 6 ¼ inches tall, and the fourth largest is 5 ¼ inches tall. The three smaller containers from biggest to smallest are 3 inches, 2 inches, and 1 inch in height.
Countertop Space:
Lined up side by side the canisters come out 5 inches and measure a length of 34 inches. I use to have an unused mug stand on my countertop, but have removed that and stacked these canisters there in its place. I have placed the smaller canisters on the larger ones to save even more space. The bottoms of the little canisters have yet to scratch the lids of the canisters they sit on.
My Experience:
Appearance:
The canisters are each uniformed in appearance. They are made of an attractive shiny white ceramic that I can almost see my reflection in. The four largest canisters each have a triangular slot that comes out its left side to hold a metal spoon. The spoons each hold the same volume, but handle size gets smaller, the smaller the canister.
The chrome locking system is made up of two rings; one wraps around the top of each canister and one wraps around the outside of the lid of each canister. Both meet in the front with a hinge and lock that look like a baby spoon and is comfortable and easy to use my thumb to push it down and secure the lid.
What I put in:
On the Oggi box, coffee beans are shown in one of the canisters. I use my canisters as storage for my most used baking items. I put flour in the biggest canister, sugar in the next largest, a cinnamon and sugar mix goes in the next size canister, and in the fourth largest I put baking soda. In the three smaller canisters, I store nutmeg, cinnamon, and baking powder.
Ease of Use:
The canisters stack well and store well. Even when empty, they stand up with the lid open unlike past canisters I had with top heavy lids that made the canister fall backwards. The lids can be opened or closed with the spoon in its place. The silicone seal is a plastic ring that cups the inside of the lid. It works well in keeping my baking items dry and fresh, but continually falls off when the canister is opened. The clasps seem secure and each hinge opens and closes with ease. The chrome is strong and the latches are made to last.
The spoons are convenient to have attached to each of the four larger canisters. I wish each canister came with a spoon. The spoons are set in the slot pointed inward, facing the canister to help the inside of the spoon avoid dust. Obviously, the outside of the spoon still gets dusty and I need to remember to clean them regularly so I do not scoop dust into the canister contents or into my baking goods. Each spoon holds a little more than a tablespoon; they are not designed to be used as measuring spoons.
With my previous glass canisters, I stored them on top of the refrigerator. However, the Oggi canisters feel a little heavy to lift. Therefore, I keep them out on my countertop. The canisters get heavier as they move up in size; meaning the smallest canister is not as heavy as its six brothers. I can lift the largest canister with one hand, even with flour in it, but prefer to have them out on the counter so I do not have to regularly move them.
Cleaning:
Luckily the cleaning for this product is infrequent. The canisters themselves are easy to clean. I usually use a sponge and scrub the inside and outside of the canister. I like that the canister is wide enough that my hand can get inside it and clean its entire inner surface. The silicone ring inside the lid is removable so I am sure to get all parts of the canister clean. The canisters are also dishwasher safe, although I have no experience cleaning them by this method.
One of the problems in cleaning is the lids do not detach and are a little awkward to clean around. The main problem with cleaning the canisters is the drying. Canister obviously need to be completely dried before putting dry items into them. The first time I used them, I dried with a towel and then let sit out for several hours. When I went to put dry items in, they ended up wet. The reason is the lid is shaped like a cup along the circumference of it. Water gets in this cup surface and stays there. I am sure Oggi did it this way to trap moisture somehow, but this is a major nuisance. I tried using a towel and drying around the inner ring. Since then I have gotten use to stuffing paper towels into this lid cup area for several days after washing the canister.
Recommendation:
I recommend Oggi 7 piece Canister set for use with baking items or for other inventive storage ideas. These canisters keep moisture out and my baking items dry. The canisters do not retain odors and they keep my dry items fresh. Each of the larger canisters come with a convenient spoon for quick adds of contents to my cooking creations. Each canister holds its own weight even when running empty. The canisters are stackable and easy to store. The only real problem with the canisters is the difficulty I mentioned in getting the inner lid dry. Seeing as I do not wash these canisters regularly, I can look past this problem.
A special thanks to Pogomom who added this item in record speed!
